Powerpoint files - ability to print/edit

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 20th December 2003, 17:13

Daughter at uni needs to download a .ppt file from the uni web site and print/edit bits of it from this PC (running Windows XP Home). Have downloaded MS Powerpoint Viewer but as it`s name implies can only view the file. Is there a way round this other than splashing out on a version of Powerpoint, or have MS cornered the market here ? Not interested in piracy of course.

Well you certainly can`t edit a file with powerpoint viewer but I`d be surprised if you can`t print it. See if she can view it on the website within IE, then she can print it as a web page.

I don`t think that any other basic software will open the presentation, although Adobe Imageready does, if you happen to have it! If all else fails, i may be able to act as a `translator`....email me on retawdegrahcnu[at]moc.erauqstlaboc if i can be of assistance. :)

Depending on the uni they may have a student agreement with Microsoft Licensing that will allow her to obtain a copy of Office/Powerpoint for free or for minimal cost. The stipulation is that it is only used for Uni work. If you let me know what Uni it is I may be able to check that for you.

If they don`t then you can get a FPP Academic Copy for £109 from Amazon

Microsoft Office XP

Microsoft Office 2003

It really depends whether this is a one off, or something she`s going to have to do on a regular basis.

Thanks for your advice good people. My daughter now says that the easiest way for her will be to get to the uni library and download from there. As you say WRabbit, whether or not we get Office 2003 for this PC depends on whether or not it`s a regular thing, it`s Liverpool University BTW.

Seasons Greetings to you all.

OK, Liverpool restrict that info by IP address (very useful of them).

Get your daughter to check these links out

Software for Students

Microsoft Campus Agreement

The second one may mention about a `student option`, and the first one may give prices for Office etc. The main difference between getting stuff under a Campus Agreement is that it is meant only to be used for work relating to her studies ie you shouldn`t create a presentation for your work on it. The FPP boxed product doesn`t have that restriction.

If you need any help deciphering the migraine inducing licensing stuff just post back and we`ll try and help.

EDIT
I don`t think they have the student option:

Other software, such as Microsoft products are not available to students as site licence products but you can purchase these directly from the supplier at reduced educational prices

WRabbit, thanks for all the trouble you`ve gone to. It looks like the MS "Educational" software is the route to take if my daughter wants the software on this PC (her/my home). It wouldn`t have been too much of a problem last academic year as at that time she was in Halls of residence and her PC (donated by dad :) ) was networked. This year however she is in private student accommodation and not (yet) connected to internet and so has to rely on uni library or me for internet access. Anyway to get back on track, whether or not I get Powerpoint will depend on estimated future use. Phew ! all this because she wanted to do some revision over the Christmas vacation.
Cheers.

Hi Fitz, totally shocked that no-one has recommended OpenOffice! The download size is about 64MB so you could download it and send it to her. Its totally free and works with all of microsofts office documents. I`ve found it to be just as easy to use as MSOffice.

Do you live in North Wales? I work there and only live on the Wirral.
If you mail me with your address I`ll download it for you and stick it in the post.

Let me know..

EDIT: downloaded now with the starters guide and setup guide.
