Strange PC problems

tazz (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 17th December 2003, 14:33

I keep getting some really wierd problems with my PC such as it turning itself off and restarting, not starting properly when I first turn it on that kind of thing. Any ideas what this could be My hard drive is always used to the max for dvd burning I wonder if it`s about to die. Or if I have a virus I used Mcafee to scan it and says it`s fine but should I be using a better virus scanner to check?

Could be any number of things - can you supply more details as to system etc.
I would think a possibility is the number of items sucking power from the computer - have you a large number of items powered off it - USB modems, etc, etc ?
Whats changed between it working and now this ?

Hi,

I think spartacus is on the right line, check your power supply, it could be failing.
Are these "mishaps" random? then its probably the PSU.

Ste.

I had a problem like this, mine turned out to be the memory on its way out - PSU is a good place to start though.

Cheers guys I`ll look into it at least it doesn`t sound like a virus. I got talked into one of those PC healthcheck things at PC World when I bought it (DON`T BOTHER TOO EXPENSIVE) so I think I`ll get hem to give it the once over after Christmas.
