Page 1 of Whats the simplist none-wireless way to send my broadband connection upstairs?

I have my PC and ADSL usb modem hooked up downstairs. I want to run a modem connection out the window and up to my bedroom where I use my laptop and X-Box (it`s about 10 meters). Which would be the best way to do this? My laptop has a ethernet and USB port, the X-Box has only the ethernet port for the modem hook-up. My ADSL modem is a USB model. Will I need to get a new modem with an ethernet connection to do this? As for example, if I buy a router to split the connection, I assume I will need an ethernet modem to hook up to it. I considered wireless but its out of my budeget range currently. Any recomendations?

Are you running XP?
You should just be able to run a cable between network ports. If there`s more than two devices to connect you will need a router too. You don`t need an ethernet modem.

Yeah, I`m running XP. So If I get a 10m nextwork cable and connected it between the ethernet ports in the PC and the Laptop that would be sufficent to get the broadband signal? ( A guy in Maplins told me I would need a router to even connect just the laptop & pc.)

You need a router to share the connection. Your best bet is to get one with the modem built in. Ebuyer do the Netgear DG834 for under £90.

Your PC and X-Box can connect to this through the ethernet ports, and you won`t need your USB modem.

There is also a wireless version of the router, but then both you PC and the X-Box will need wireless network adapters. Your PC can take a USB one, but you`ll need a special one for your console. The Linksys is the only one I know of

You can just connect to PC`s together via the network ports and use XP`s Internet Connection Sharing. But it means one PC must always be on for the other to use the connection and it`s not the best solution. It`s far better to use a router.
