Painfully slow downloads from Kazaa, even with Broadband!

Brian Elliott (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 27th November 2003, 19:07

Hey guys,

I`ve just had broadband installed & thought I take a look through Kazaa Lite & WinMX, maybe download a couple of tunes, see how fast it would go. ;) But I`m finding downloading a near-impossibility, I`m consistently stuck with "remotely queuing" or "more sources" messages, but no downloading!

Any of you have any tips to get the quickest download speeds? I`ve checked by connection & its running at a very healty 576kbps. Could I have a firewall issue?

Thanks,

EVH

TBH I had used Winmx on Dial-up and never had a problem but the same cannot be said after stepping up to broadband. The search takes about eight months and as such I never use it now.
I would recommend you try Bearshare as this seems to be one of the best about at the moment. Others have recommended Bearshare and I used it as a result of their views and have never had a problem with download speeds so give it a try :)

Choagy :)

PS I am not sure but is Kazaa not loaded up with spyware.

First off - don`t use Kazaa, get Kazaalite, the non spyware packed version!

Secondly, the other users using these programs can limit the bandwidth they share - making your downloads slower. The only way to get good download speeds is if there are a lot of users sharing the same file, that way the file is simultaneously downloaded from several locations ( 20 users limiting bandwidth to 1kb/s each = 20kb/s download speed in total)

Your connection speed has nothing to do with the download speeds you get on Kazaa unfortunately :(

Just because you have Broadband doesn`t necessarily mean everything is so much faster with Kazaa. Remember you`re downloading off of other people who may not be able to upload very fast. In other words in doesn`t matter how fast your broadband is if the other people have slow connections. When using Kazaa look for the files with the most amount of users, you`ll undoubtedly get that one a helluva lot faster.

You`re downloading off of people, not off of servers; that`s why the slow speeds! Someone may have a track you want, but might only have a 56k dial-up, so he/she can only send it to you as fast as their connection can handle; not forgetting they are also probably uploading other files at the same time to other people.

Oh, and I wouldn`t even bother with Kazaa unless you`re just using it for music - far better applications around. ;)

Care to name names? I`m already looking at Bearshare here but am concerned about Spyware.

Whatever P2P sevice you wish to use, they all rely on the same thing: Other people, which of course, makes the whole thing completely unpredicatble.

If the file you want os on a dial-up user`s pc, it`ll take longer to get to you. Plus don`t forget that there are many users out there who will deliberately re-name a file if only to up their participant rating.

P2P services are frought with uncertainty, just because YOU`RE on broadband, doesn`t mean you`ll get a better service
