320kbps mp3`s?

gavinglasgow (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 30th May 2010, 20:49

I`m looking to start legally buying mp3`s. The problem is everywhere I`m looking ie iTunes, Amazon, Play, etc only seem to provide mp3`s at 256kbps and to be honest, I`m a 320kbps type of guy.

Can anyone recommend a good site that sells HQ mp3`s?

Cheers

Can you hear the difference between 256 and 320? Or is it just a preference?

Any difference has got to be psychological really. 320k is the highest bitrate you can get on mp3 so you know that will be as good as you can get.

There is a big difference in the way it is converted. I use `cool edit` & get very good results at, `wait for it` 90k. Yet I`ve heard conversions made on a different engine at 180k & more that are not as good.

There is not enough information in the soundfile at 90kbps to sound "very good".  No matter which app you use.

Steve, please don`t do a bowfer on me. Most people could not tell the difference between a CD & 90 converted properly. For music in the car I use mainly 90. I do go to 180 fo more important things, however it is difficult to tell the difference. Try cool edit & see for yourself.
I am talking of converting from a CD in the first place. I also use CDEX, a very useful programme but crap at MP3 conversion for good quality.

How about we find some royalty free high quality sound audio and try it? :)

Most people can tell the difference between a CD and a 180K file conversion.

It`s in the high frequencies I personally notice it, cymbal noises and "s" `s etc where they sound very raspy... almost like a bad FM reception on those noises.

Don`t notice it much on higher bitrates.

I use Exact Audio Copy and Lame encoder - generally considered to be the absolute best there is.
Believe me, I can tell the difference.  If you want to continue to believe 90kbps is "very good" then fine, for you, it is.  For me, a rip at 90 compared to a VBR rip using Lame would be like comparing a squelchy LW broadcast to a CD.
