Page 1 of Genesis - Gabriel era.

I cannot believe how many times I have played "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" in the last few months. Being an old fogie I have re discovered this classic album since going to see The Musical Box re create the live show at The Royal Albert Hall.

I know that most people (under 40) will not know what I am on about, but this album has got to be my all time favourite (at the moment) :D

The music, themes and imagery are timeless, the interaction between the musicians and the vocal interpretation is second to none. It is hard to beleive that this album was released over 30 years ago!

i have also listened to Selling England by the Pound, Live, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot over and over agian for months and maybe I am reliving my childhood, but blimey this stuff is brilliant. I just wish Peter had stayed around for a couple of more albums.

I also like his Up (CD) and Growing Up (DVD) the musicianship is fantastic and the songs are mainly all classics.

I know that this stuff is not a lot of peoples cup of tea, but give it a go (if you haven`t heard it before). I wholly recommend the early Genesis especially "The Lamb" it is so well structured as a complete concept and the songs and instrumentals are great. I end up whistling along to the guitar and keyboard solos and "singing :o " (which drives the wife and kids crazy!).

I understand that Peter had trouble completing the album in time and ended up having to get the others involved in more of the writing due to pressures put on by the record co at the time, but this does not affect the end result (in my view).

Yes, it`s a great album - best described by my wife as "exquisite".

Yup, simply awesome stuff. Went to see The Lamb too. It is a great album but not as accessable as some of the other early stuff. Sides 1 and 2 are fantastic but there are a couple of slightly weaker parts on sides 3/4. (the first 3 mins of The Waiting Room..) Still a classic though. But Selling England is the best for me. One one album you`ve got the classics Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, Firth Of Fifth, The Battle Of Epping Forest and The Cinema Show.
But Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot (with my favourite all time track - Suppper`s Ready) are great too.
The best 4 consecutive studio albums by a band. Ever.

I think the post Gabrial era gets a bit of a rough deal too. OK, not the We Can`t Dance stuff but albums such as Trick Of The Tail and Wind and Wuthering are classics too. :D

I think that Lamb is possibly their best album - seems to have a bit more of a darker edge to it than the others. I gave up on Genesis when Gabriel left.

Incidentally i went to see Van Der Graaf Generator recently and they were superb - always were my favourite progsters.

`Lamb` is one of my favourite albums ever - and certainly amongst my top ten. From the crazy enossification through to the climax of `It` (literally...!) it sends shivers down my spine in a way that no other album has ever done. Too bad that when Gabriel left the others drove Hackett out and then settled into being one of the dreariest AOR bands in the world!!

I was at a loose end yesterday missus was out shopping I was wondering what to do, so after seeing all this stuff about Genesis I thought thats it have a listen to Selling England by the pound, so I go to my Genesis vinyl collection and it`s not there, after a bit of thought if I remember that Ive only ever had a cassette copy which is long gone, anyway I played Trick of the tail instead which was fine.

My son went into town today under instruction to find me a vinyl copy of Selling England by the pound, which he thankfully did, It`s been a long time since I last listened to it, but I have to say, after playing it, what a fantastic, stunning, album.

Gary, try to see G2 Genesis they are good at re creating the songs although they do not profess to look like the real thing they can certainly play the real thing.
Someone who attemps the opening keyboards of Firth of Fifth, and nearly manages it, gets my vote.

The Drummer is great and the Keyboard player can really play well. Close your eyes and you will be back in the seventies. :D

If you want a DVD (Torrent) of Genesis at Shepperton Studios which was recorded on 16mm film in 1973 (I think April) and has now been digitised to vob files and is 4.36 Gigabites (so takes about 2 days to download on Broadband)
