Just got a Scan sc-200.

wobblegob (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 18th November 2000, 12:37

I have just got one of these players after months of trying to decide which player to get.
I only have a couple of discs at the moment, Jurassic Park and The Mummy. Gladiator is coming on Monday.
I have to say i am very very impressed with this player and at the moment i feel as though i have made absoloutely the right choice.
The picture quality is out of this world and the sound is excellent also.
I have had no problems with the machine so far.

One minor query i have is about the sound settings. I have the player connected to a 28" Grundig widescreen TV with pro-logic surround sound and i am wondering what the optimum settings for the dvd player are for this sort of setup??? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

I also would love to know how do make the player vcr friendly so if anyone knows please let me know.

Finally where is the best place to get R1 discs from off the net.

Cheers

sc-2000 rocks !!!!! :-))

Dear wobblegog,
I`m afraid I`m still in the "Shall I, shan`t I" phase, but am very encouraged to read your glowing report and that you finally took the bull by the horns!!
Am I right in thinking then that any orders placed now directly with Scan would provide the very latest version of the machine and the only things to upgrade at a later date would be the extension of the MP3 filenames and something to do with macro?? (Yeah I`m a techno nightmare).
What about your music CD reproduction as others seem less pleased with this aspect.
Interesting you mention about the optimum sound settings. I too have a widescreen Phillips with dolby pro logic and as you say you may as well get the best out of the TV sound.
Any takers?
Cheers

Robbie.

I would say that the Audio CD replay is inferior to my Aiwa mini system but it is not appalling in my opinion. At the end of the day if i want to play a music cd i will use my aiwa system which is situated very near to my tv, video and dvd anyway. I Think the cd output might sound better if i hook the audio from the dvd up to my aiwa system rather than just using the Speakers on the TV. I also am led to believe that you are right about the Mp3 and the macrovision disabling patch which i am looking forward to getting very soon.

I would like to know what i should do if a dvd has dolby digital sound and stereo sound or surround sound??

Which setting will sound best throught my pro-logic tv???

Just borrowed the Corrs live at the Albert Hall and it sounded a lot better with the pcm stereo rather than the dolby digital.

Any advice from anyone would be great.

Cheers.

The Pro-Logic soundtrack is simply encoded on the stereo track so as long as the L+R sound channels are connected to the TV you should get surround sound. Clearly you can`t get the full benefit of DD5.1 unless you get a separate decoder. Of course the easiest thing to do is simply try the different options and see what sounds the best to you! One last thing to bear in mind is that DD comes in several flavours (or at least in terms of number of channels) so you may see DD5.1/DD5.0/DD2.0. The first number refers to full bandwidth channels and the second to the subwoofer.

Hope some of this helps.

Karl.

I also have a new SC-2000 and an Aiwa mini system; you will find that audio CD reproduction is just fine if you hook it up to your hi-fi. The TV`s speakers are simply not that good; it is the speakers that are the limiting factor, not the Scan`s playback capabilities.

Incidentally, I too am eagerly awaiting the MP3 long filename update, it will make the SC-2000 into a really cracking machine.

I`m not going to say "Scan Rocks" - because words like "Rocks" are passe these days - only used by sad old farts.
