Plasma Screen burn in help?

JohnnyTV (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 26th February 2011, 22:27

I`ve had my plasma (Panasonic G2046) for about 6-7 months and just noticed tonight when there are light colours being displayed that I can faintly see the MTV logo. It hasn`t been paused or watched for long periods of time so can`t understand how it`s got there to be honest but obviously pretty annoyed that it has, especially as I thought new plasmas were meant to be much better at combatting this.

So first of all is it likely to be covered by warranty (from Costco)? I doubt it but just wondered

Second of all is there a way to improve it (or possibly even fix as like I say it is faint and only visible when there are light colours in the background?

I found this - does anyone have any experience of it or know of anything else worth trying?

I wouldn`t be so bothered if I`d had the TV for ages but I don`t plan on replacing it for a few years yet so any help would be much appreciated.

I`ve seen similar ideas for unsticking LCD pixels, which can have varying success. Worth a try before you go through the warranty route?

When you see `Sex Babes` over the screen is the time to worry.

I had a pixel die on my Panasonic Plasma after a couple of months, tried some of those programs that do quick colour refresh, white noise etc with no joy, but worth a go.

I bought mine in Richer Sounds, told them, they told me to do a hardware reset, manual says what to do, I also left it unplugged from mains for a couple of hours, that didn`t help but worth a go.

In the end an engineer came out and replaced the screen, engineer told me Panasonic are very good about replacing bits, unlike other companies which try and fob you off with the "it`s part of the manufacturing process and a problem with plasma" excuse.

Don`t TV`s from Costco come with a five year warranty?
Last time I looked at TV`s there they did. If that`s the case, I`d get it back there & let them sort it out.
At least worth a phone call there to ask.
Is the same TV still on sale there?

Didn`t find a solution to the same problem with my LCD though at least I`ve had a few years out of it.
Old thread
Still suffering as we can`t afford to replace it yet.
If it`s in warranty I`d throw it back at them ASAP and if there`s even the vaguest hint of the same thing in 11 months time I`d throw it back at them again.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

If it`s in warranty, I would send it back to them and make it their problem.

If its within the warranty, I wouldn`t use the programme that is linked above as according to the site it can reduce image quality over the whole tv by reducing contrast, brightness etc which is irreversible, and I don`t think a warranty would cover it if the whole screen was damaged by something like that (although I may be wrong, you may get away with just claiming for a poor image quality)

There`s way too many replies to this point to quote them all but the bad news is, Sorry, no it isn`t covered.
For the replies this is *not* Costco or the Manufacturer`s problem as this is a user issue and user damage.
Almost every plasma Guarantee I`ve seen states within it that Image Retention or Screen Burn is *not* covered.

And for the unenlightened ( :D ) it`s caused by leaving a static image on the screen for an extended period (generally takes over 2 to 4 hours to burn in) and it`s why we used to advise people watching MTV/Sky Sports/ Sky News to be careful of the logo but on Sky News etc also of the ticker tape on the bottom of the screen... the messages didn`t burn due to them moving but the background bar they sat in did!

So, the solution! (it`s actually quite easy) .
The only downside to this solution is you are generally wiping a few months of life off your screen but I did this to my original Sammy 42P2 which I bought approximately 8 years ago ex-display (had been on for about 8 months) and it`s still going strong.... screen is perfect and only has a minor fault in the audio startup section:

Go to an image creation program and create an image of your size of screen (preferably but a large one will do) and make it TOTALLY WHITE! (I don`t know the colour codes for this but I`m pretty sure if yer stuck one of our regulars will make and mail it to you as it`s a small file)

Now using Nero or similar, burn this file to disc as a VCD/ Mini DVD etc or whichever format your DVD player works on and make sure it`s set to constantly loop back showing itself.
Insert into your DVD player as you go to work leaving the now completely white image on screen as you leave the house.
Return approximately 8 to 10 hours later and turn off the DVD player, the screen should now have wiped.

You aren`t really removing it, you`re kinda burning the whole screen to one level which evens it out. Don`t know if it would make any contrast differences etc but it didn`t with my Sammy.

Oh yeah, and usual disclaimers, this worked for me and for quite a few customers when I was in Currys but if it don`t work for you or gives adverse results it aint my fault! Try at yuor own risk....

[edit] Just checked your link and it sounds like they are saying something very similar except adding this JScreen thing into it... trust me on that you just need a completely white image. t`s also NOT easiest to notice screen burn on a white background as it`s actually easier to see on a black background or as the set is switched off and the power/luminoscity (sp?) drains from the panel [editoff]

How long before manufacturers add a little blur thing that you can move to cover the logo to make it less obtrusive, or to just repeat the scene an inch or so above/below.

Thanks for the help guys, Jimbo happy to try out the white image but just wanted to be clear first - I`ve tried having the TV on for the past couple of nights to see if that would remove the problem (it may have slightly faded but is still there) - BUT before I go and try the white background or Jscreen fixes - you`d mentioned that the screen burn would appear on a black background - on mine it definitely isn`t visible when dark (or switched off) - only when it`s on a light background, white being the most obvious.

I`ve taken a photo:

So before I go ahead with the white image fix, do you still think that`s the best course of action?

Sorry for all the questions just wanted to get your opinion.
