Is it worth getting a Plasma fixed these days????

kebabhead (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th October 2009, 07:38

Bit of a quandry at the minute

My four year old 42 inch LG plasma has recently developed a fault

There is a vertical red line about 1 inch wide running 3 inches in from the right hand side of the screen

Having contacted LG UK support they put me on to one of their authorised repairers

Having spoken to them about the problem, they said it was either one of the boards or the screen but they said they would not be able to indentify the problem until an engineer was on site and even then if they fix it the problem may return which left me feeling less than confident

The call out fees they charge is £65 for the first half hour and he said they`d be on site for a min of 1 hour so that would be over £120 in call out fees before the cost of the repair

Given the fact that you can buy a resonably priced new repalcement for around £500-£600 just wondering should I buy a new one

PS haven`t gone down the 6 year SoGA route yet as I don`t think LG will budge with this

Well you could always try and have a look at it yourself but make sure it doesn`t drop and smash when you pick it up ;)

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

How can they not be in a position to budge?

Because the set is now 4 years old it`s down to me to prove that there was an inherent fault when I bought it

As I have no technical experience I have to pay for an engineers report and then submit it to LG

Even then they`d want to examine the set (at my cost) before making a decision

Remember the sale of goods act relates to the retailer and not the manufacturer. You need to take this up with your retailer. Also, if you paid for the TV with a credit card that company is jointly liable under the consumer credit act. Your local Trading Standards may be able to assist with advice and a sample letter. Last advice I received was that it is considered reasonable that a TV should last for about 5 years without needing repair. I successfully had all repair bills paid for a TV that was 18 months old. At four years old they may only agree to pay a limited amount.

Even if it was something you could fix yourself, they would not supply the part to you. TV manufacturers will only ship the part out to a known repairer. I know, did it with Toshiba a few years back.
