shnozzer (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 21st August 2001, 10:15

i`m considering signing my life away for a decent telly, should i go 100 hz or not?
i`ve been told that 100hz is crap for watching broadcast tv,and really crap when watchingh football, rugby etc.which is what i watch mostly.

Schnozzer,

A few years back, finding a tv with decent 100hz processing was as rare as coming home to Cameron Diaz lying naked on the sofa.
Now however,tv manufacturers have got their act together and started bringing out sets that are actually very good with all material.
100hz processing used to add nasty blurring and edge tizzing effects to everything it displayed, and yes that sadly included Match of the Day `Through the eyes of a Tramp` edition.
100hz these days brings richer colours, steady images, and packs more detail into the picture. Its not so important for digital sources like Sky or Itv Digital-even more so DVD,because those images are pretty much faultless to begin with.
Heres a simple test for you;audition a set that can switch between 100hz and `natural`.Next just ask to watch a dvd`s end credits(honest!).If the image you see is a flickering mess with or without 100hz processing, then try another!
Tvs from Toshiba,Jvc,Hitatchi, and Philips all boast excellent 100hz processing,so go for one of those. Its pretty much standard on all new widescreen sets,so buy with confidence.

All the best

Blame NTL,its all their fault! :-)

How do I know if my tv`s 100hz or not ?
It`s a Hitachi CW28511TN.
Website doesn`t say.
I`m not overly bothered if it is or not, just curious.
Cheers

What you have come across, I`m afraid, is a totally subjective, opinion-based issue.

You need to get yourself into your local TV superstore and look at AS MANY screens as you possibly can - preferably all with DVD feeds. Checking it out for yourself is the only way to be certain.

I`m actually considered backward by my friends ;-) I LOVE 50hz tv`s for the natural clear picture they give. I can`t see any flickering and I DESPISE the digital `feel` that even the best 100hz processing gives a picture, and they *can* still smear on sports such as footy or tennis, if the input signal isn`t great. Even the new Sonys which allow you to set a 100hz TV to 50hz don`t look right still - and you`ve got to shell out around £1400 for the pleasure !! As a confirmed 50hz-phile I just got a *beautiful* Panasonic 32inch set for under £700 because it`s considered "old technology" !! Fine by me !!

Don`t forget however, that some people CAN see the flickering on a 50hz set, and most say that once you`ve watched 100hz you can`t go back and DO start to see flickering on all other TV`s.

It`s entirely down to you, and your pair of eyes - don`t take ANYONE else`s opinion over your own (even mine ;-). (But just think about the number of DVD`s you could buy with the £300-500 you`d save by buying 50hz !!!)

Cheers

PS Westy - I cleaned your posts for you ;-)

You never included Sony in your list of TVs that "boast excellent 100MHz Processing". Was there a reason for this?

It`s just that I`m after a Sony TV and had decided on a 50MHz Model (32DX30) because I thought 100MHz TVs were still dodgy. If there not as bad as some people say (which seems to be the case from this thread) I may consider a 100MHz Sony Model (32FX65).

Any feedback is grateful,

Thanks
