help - im new to DVD

mincer (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 9th August 2001, 12:22

I want to get a fairly good DVD player to go alongside my 2 year old Philips 32" Dolby Pro-logic tv. The only problem is i dont know alot about DVD players and when i went to Comet, i knew more about them than the sales guy. I would like to be able to play Region 1 discs as well as Region 2, but will i have to chip the DVD player for the movies to work?
Could you suggest a good DVD player for under £200 which will play american and uk discs as well as work with my TV.
Thanks

You can`t buy multiregion players from places like Currys or Comet despite what their employees say (a mate of mine was told it was multiregion because it could play ntsc discs). You can remote hack some, but the better makes (like Toshiba, Sony and Pioneer can`t be hacked with the remote)

The only place on the not on the internet i know of is Richer sounds that sell them multiregion. Look at their website at www.richersounds.com to get an idea of the prices (although i wouldn`t advise buying from the website as the customer service is not meant to be very good, but the shop itself is fine)

I would advise the Toshiba SD 210e on your budget.

Hi mincer,
There are quite a lot of good players about for that price, I think it`s a matter of snooping about on this forum and looking at the old threads that some of the more knowledgable folk on here have posted on.

Try these looking for these players on the search bar though, I remember hearing some good stuff about them.
Toshiba 110 or 210 (round the £200 mark I think)
Samsung 511 (my player £130 :)
Minato G1 (£150 tescos)

in the chain stores they arnt very helpfull, but richersounds has really excellent custoner care , so go there. I had a friend who was conned into buying a £320 sharp dvd playerabout a year ago. it doesnt even play the matrix or toy story properly. they were also told multi region dvd players are illegal.

No, due to the region coding. They`ll play NTSC Region 2 (i.e. Japanese) discs and "Region 0" releases, but if you want to play other regions you`ll need a chip or hack.
