My home made dvd`s won`t play on other machines. Help!

MarkL (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 1st August 2005, 18:57

Can anyone help me? I`ve transferred loads of my old home videos onto discs, finalised them, however they will only play back on the machine which made the recordings ( Samsung 100E ). How can I get them to work on other machines? I`m worried that if I change my machine, they`ll be useless.

Mark :)

At a guess I would have thought the discs themselves may be the problem.
If the recordings are made on say the +R format then try a -R disc or vicky vercky :)
If the recordings still fail to play on other DVD players no matter what format you use then I am not too sure what or where the problem/cure lies.
The only other thing I could suggest is try using DVD Shrink and Nero 5/6.
Rip the DVD using Shrink and then burn the DVD using Nero (Shrink will use Nero automatically after ripping)
This may write the DVD in the correct/more compatible format for most DVD players to play.
Google for DVD Shrink and you will find it no problem.
You may be able to download a DEMO (Or even from a p2p site ;) ) of Nero from the Ahead / Nero web-site but again not sure if it allows burning but worth a wee swatch anywhooo :) .
As I said, just a guess.

I`ve had this problem also!

The general pattern is that the dearer the DVD player is then the less likely it will play the disc!!?!?

I can never work that out!! :/

I know this is the obvious answer , but I always forget to do it when making DVD+Rs on my home DVD recorder. Mostly , I use the PC DVD Rewriter and Nero does it for you.

Sorry folks for my ignorance on such hi-tech issues but I think these two words give the game away :)

Think it`s because cheap DVD players use PC components - and therefore far more compatible. I`ve had a number of old/knackered DVDs (from rental libraries) that won`t play on a DVD recorder or DVD player but are fine in the pc.

i also had probs maybe its the cheap recorder. in my case im backing up the VHS on dvd+R running through shrink editing the trailers etc and then burning onto whatever format using shrink. then during playback on anyother machine the picture freeze`s evry minute or so. then i haveto fast forward to get it to play!

very frustrating as otherwise im a happy chappy! yes i finalised the disc.

any sudgestions
