Transferring AVI to HDD/DVD recorder

eddiecurry (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 2nd April 2005, 11:04

Hi

I have a Panasonic DMR-E100H although this question could be relevant to any HDD recorder.

What is the best way to transfer AVIs from my PC (eg stuff I have shot from a digital camera or downloaded from the net) directly onto my Panasonic`s hard drive, so I can write it to DVD?

I can burn them straight to DVD from my PC, but for some reason I find that when I do this, the DVDs often stutter when I play them elsewhere - whereas anything I record on the Panasonic machine is usually perfect.

I have asked Mr Google but come up with nothing useful.

Many thanks,
Eddie

Well I think you have a number of options, but you will have to decide what is the best way, depending on if you want to spend any money and/or your PC/Panny capabilities.

Option 1 - burn you AVI files as data files to DVD and purchase a DVD player capable of playing back AVI files. Connect your DVD player to your Panny and record them in realtime

Option 2 - convert/burn them as DVD VR files on your pc and import them to your Panny

Option 3 - if your digital camera has an AV lead then you may be able to connect this to your Panny and record direct from the digital camera

Option 4 (I suppose this should have been option 1 really) - try and sort out your PC conversion/burning process. When you say that your converted DVD`s stutter when played back elsewhere - does that mean that your Panny plays the back perfectly? Have you checked your converted files to make sure they play back perfectly before burning to DVD? Do you use the same blank media in both your Panny and your PC DVD burner? What software/settings are you using to to convert your AVI`s?

Option 1: Buy better DVDR media, stuttering is usually caused by bad dyes.
It may also be being caused by the writer in your PC on it`s way out but you would have needed to have burned a fair amount of discs and usually you get power callibration errors instead of stuttery discs.

Option 2: Drop your write speed.
Chances are yuor Panny is recording real time, or 1x. If it`s "dubbing" ie, from an internal hard drive etc, then it can be recording faster.
Try re-writing one of yuor PC discs and doing one at 4x, one at 8 and if you`re using 16x discs, one at 16x.

You should find the stuttering gets worse the faster you burn.
If you can be bothered to wait for it, and if the media/writer allows, even try dropping it to 2x, which is about 30 minutes per 4 gig (2 hour) disc.

the best option i found is to use windows dvd maker , it will convert and burn to dvd all in one operation it takes approx 1 hour to do this, i used to use the method of putting avi onto a cd then playing it through another dvd onto my panny , but the windows dvd maker works fine for me. hope this helps.
