I`ve got a Scan sc2000. Even though many people slate this player, I would recommend it for starting off in the DVD world. You`ve got multi-regional ability, DTS, optical audio output ease of use and pretty cheap too.

Audio- you do sometimes get lipsync problems, but one does with many players.

Video- sometimes you may get a `hiccup` but it`s never as bad as VHS is ALL the time!

Overall- if you want to get a sub 200 quid player. You can`t go wrong with the SC2000 for value.

I would not wish a scan player on my worst enemy. Avoid it like the plauge. If you ignore this advice you will be sorry. Scan sent me two players which were all faulty and the quality was crap. There are far superior players around and for less money too.

Try the Wharfedale M5 from your local Tesco if there`s any left. The initial drive problem has been cured : all players should be marked up `New Improved Technology` now.

£180.

Does everything you want and more :

Automatic NTSC/PAL conversion (providing your telly can handle NTSC)
Multi-region playback via remote hack
DD/DTS decoder on board
Ability to playback every format known : DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, VCD, SVCD

Alternatively, a similar player without the DTS decoder (non-essential if you get an amp with DTS capability) is the Afreey LD2060 - £149 cheapest.

Try http://www.area450.co.uk for information on these players.
