As far as I know there is no firmware avaliable. I logged into the ILO forums and asked the same question but was told the firmware upgrades for the ILO 04 wouldn`t work on the dvr-230 as the ntsc/pal incompatability gets in the way.

The 4kus website dosen`t even mention the DVR-230 and the Asda helpline told me the only source of information/support for the recorder was them.

It`s been like this for a good 6 months now, but as they sell more of these machines maybe they will look into getting more product support avaliable.
If there is anybody from Asda who reads these pages they might be able to shed some light on this situation.

Personally, I would like the 3 hr record mode so lets wait and see.

hi i could be wrong but i seen the remote for the 4KUS in asda the other day and it is identical to the liteon remote that i have. i am sure that a 4KUS is a rebadged liteon and if that is the case then the liteon firmware will upgrade it.
have a look around the forums as i am sure i have seen it mentioned that the 4KUS is a rebadged liteon. hope this helps.

ILO and 4KUS are both Taiwanese(?) exporter companies owned by LiteOn. Both machines are badged by LiteOn for exclusive sale to the US (Walmart) and UK (ASDA, a division of Walmart). The firmware is customised for the video systems of the respective countries, apparently. However, I believe both machines are closely related to the LiteOn 5001, but I wouldn`t want to risk wrecking the firmware to prove it.

Go to the Liteon site and in the firmware downloads section enter the serial number for your units and country, if it is not accepted under say 5005 then try 5006 and so on.

One of these should recognise your serial number and offer you a download, follow the destructions and burn your disc.

If you then want to try applying a hacked firmware such as that offered by wizard you can do this in the knowledge that these units are really quite resiliant to failed upgrades and will happily accept a re-inputting of the official firmware.

If you are cautious at all then email Liteon for advice - they do reply.

I bought the 4KUS DVR230 from Asdda and have found it to be an excellent machine but also wanted the 3 hour recording option. I contacted Asda who then got on to the technical folk and this is the response I received.

`This is a design spec. that confirmed by Lite-On and Asda before the 4Kus project kicked off.
Because of H/W limitation, it is difficult for us to add this extra function, 3 hours recording, by firmware update. Sorry we are unable to comply with your requirements this time.

For your reference, as for the Lite-On products who has a function of 3 hour recording, they are designed by different device. Therefore, the cost is higher than 4Kus`

It seems therefore that 3 hour is not to be but nevertheless the 4 hour mode does give a lot better quality than VHS - and as they say - you do get what you pay for!
