looking to replace my VHS with a starter dvd recorder so come on all you clued up dvd types which do i go for???
4kus dvr230 @ £140 in Asda or
Matsui dvr 100 @ £120 in Currys ????

Any other machines of a simillar price around worth considering????

I read a good review of the ASDA one recently. For just a bit more ( about £190 ) you could get a Panasonic)

Like many others I am the extremely happy and satisfied owner of a Lite-On LVW 5005B.
This excellent DVD-Recorder can be had for about £110 from Argos.
Ignoring the fact that it is extremely well priced this unit IMHO is well made and very easy to operate.
The option to record up to six hours is a useful function but TBH I would not record anything at the six hour setting.
I myself record at the two hour setting for movies from the Sky+ box and at the four hour setting for series such as The Prisoner.
Recordings at the four hour setting are perfectly watchable while recordings made at the two hour setting are almost perfect.
For an average Joe like myself the difference between the one hour setting and the two hour setting is almost non-existant, unless you pause and zoom in and TBH how often do we do that.
For £110 I honestly cannot think of a better offer. Give it a go and I think you will be, like me, extremely pleased with it.

You may find the Lite On 5006 in that budget too-that adds a nicam stereo tuner (5005 only has mono tuner) and gives RGB in (Useful, but not essential, if you intend attaching things like Freeview or Sky boxes). The Lite On range has a large user base and you will find plenty of on line forums and firmware tweaks and upgrades to add even more functionality.

I understand that the Asda model is a rebadged liteon 5006 which carries the usual asda 3 year guarentee ( i think im correct ???)
What benifits would the extra cash for the panasonic give me over this ???

I`ve been working at ASDA for a couple of months now and they no longer do the 3 year guarantee. My branch has been out of stock of that model since I decided to buy one (using my 10% discount ;) ) but it gave me time to do more research and decided to go with a DVD recorder with hard drive instead (Pioneer 420 from Peter Tyson due to be delivered on Monday). Just a tad more expensive!! I WAS going to go for the Panasonic E55 but knew I`d want to use RW and play on other (£30 from ASDA) DVD players upstairs.

Thank you to everyone for all the postings and information I have found on this and the other two furums (even though I can`t join in on those!).

It`s the same as the Lite On 5005, not 5006

Hi there, I work for Asda as a driver and I think you will find that they have stopped the 3 year guarantee, and now only offer 1 year. :(
