More advice urgently needed on connecting Panasonic DVD Recorder plse :)

littlewren (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 27th October 2004, 13:37

I recently asked for help in connecting my Panasonic E55 DVD Recorder/TV/NTL box/Video Recorder and was given some good advice from Jimbo and told to come back if I needed more help.

I am completely stuck, I`m afraid. :/

Before I tell you which connections I have, I don`t know what "RF loop through" is as I am a complete and utter novice and don`t know where to start with connections! Could you possibly tell me where the different scart leads go in very layman`s terms as I don`t understand anything more than "put Scart lead x into this hole and that hole" and "plug into the mains!"

My TV has 2 scart sockets
My NTL box has 2 scart sockets
My video recorder has also 2 scart sockets and of course
the Panasonic DVD Recorder has 2 scart sockets.

Is it possible to use just the scart leads and no other "thin" wires that came with the DVD Recorder.

Please could you give me basic instructions. :)

If you manage to get me set up with all this, it`ll be hugs and kisses all round! :)

Thanks in advance,

Carrie

Hang on for an hour or so till Bowfer clocks it. He sorted me out and I guarantee he will have you up and running by sundown.

Simplest way

Take a scart from the `to TV` socket of your NTL box to the `AV2` in socket of your E55.
Take another scart from the `AV1 TV` socket of your E55 to the `AV1` socket of your TV.
The above is assuming your NTL box outputs an RGB signal.
Set your NTL to RGB.
Go into the set up menu of the E55 and set the AV2 and AV1 settings to RGB as well.
That should be you.

I`ve missed your VHS out of the equation.
Two good reasons for that.

1/ I don`t know how to include it
2/I don`t know why you`d still want to include it.

;)

Hi,

Thanks very much for that, I will try and set it up using your instructions tomorrow. I have a Panasonic Video Recorder mainly because I have lots of home-made videos that I want to transfer onto DVD. So I will need to set that up too. :)

You could put the VHS away in a cupboard and just connect it to the E55 as and when you need it,rather than have it permanently plugged in.
Simplest way to do that would be to use the 3 pin (White, yellow and red) plugs you got with the E55.
Plug them into the back of the video, then plug the other end of them into the front of the E55.
Change the channel on the E55 to `AV3`,press play on the video, press record on the E55.

Let`s face it,you don`t want some carbunkle of a VHS spoiling your nice new set-up,like some ugly friend that stops the rest of you pulling... :D

Re: the VCR, my theory with more or less the same setup is going to be the VCR scart out will connect to the NTL VCR in scart that it would have been connected to previously, in theory(and this is where I am not sure) all you are doing is adding the E55 in the gap between NTL box and TV. Then when using the VCR it should override the NTL signal and go through to the E55 if you want to record from tapes. Though I`m guessing if you were watching a video you couldn`t record/watch NTL channel at same time

My feelings on the subject are that you should always, where possible,go for as few connections as possible.
The more you connect, the more chance of signal degradation and/or switching problems.
I`m maybe overly cautious, but there you go.

If it were me I would do with the VHS what I do with my digital video camera.
Keep it in a cupboard and plug it into the front (pull down flap) of the E55 as and when you need it,or transfer everything in one big shift and do away with it forever.

I said "flap"....
Uh huh huh...
:D

I know, I was reluctant to put it back in but the wifes on maternity leave and I hadn`t got round to transferring her videos or getting a macrovision remover so I am having to replace it back in the loop

given the crap she watches the degradation of it going through one extra loop wasn`t a factor personally :D it shouldn`t affect any NTL pictures to TV or DVDR that much

I got one of these

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=2501&productId=108277&clickfrom=name

Then just

Plug a scart from the tv output on the switch box to your tv

Plug panasonic recorder into socket A

Plug vcr into socket B

Plug NTL into C

That way you can push a button to record from either ntl or your video onto your panaonic recorder.

Hope this helps.

Mike.
