wutang2k (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 11th February 2004, 22:01

Thinking of getting rid of that SKY family package cause they have put it up again its now £20.00 and i dont bloody watch any of those damn UKgold channels..

i dont want to fork out for a Freeview box as i already have SKY dish reciever etc. i have removed my card from the SKY box but only a few channels are left, i mean the usual channels like ITV and Channel 4 are gone too only left with those BBC channels and some dire shopping channels,....

does anyone with a bit of knowlege know anything i can do?

You could get a freeview card. Provided you keep the dish hooked up to the digibox.

Flog your sky system on Ebay and buy a freeview box with the money. If its in good order you should cover your costs.

I did the same as you I can`t justify £20 a Month for Sky
If you want to keep the dish etc.
When you cancel Sky,

Phone up and order a `Free to Air` Card,

It will cost you about £23

You get
All BBC Channels
TMF and another music channel
Sky sports News (great for saturdays)
Sky sports

among the other `Crap`

Haven`t got the number with me now but will later if you are interested.

What more do you get with the `free to air` card than Freeview?

I don`t have the definitive answer to this , but this is the situation as I understand it.
Until July 2003 , Sky provided a Free-To-Air card which gave subscription free access to BBC channels , ITV , CH4 , CH5 and some other channels. This card was funded by the BBC. From July 2003 , the BBC moved their digital tranmissions to another satellite , stopped their funding for the Free-To-Air cards and became clear (unencrypted).
This meant that with a Sky Digital box , you can now get all the BBC channels (and whatever other channels are unencrypted) without any card , but (I think I am right in saying) the Free cards are no longer available (they were provided by Sky for a small fee until 31/01/04). Therefore the only options are to use no card and get whatever channels are broadcast `clear` (this may include Sky Sports News , but most certainly does not include Sky Sports) or get Freeview (allowing for whatever reception / aerial problems that may entail).
Flick through and see what channels you can get on your digibox without the card in and if you are happy with that line up , fine , but to get any other channels you will have to stay subscribing to Sky or get Freeview.

If you cancel your Sky subscription, you can just leave your card in the digibox and receive channels like ITV1, Channel Four and Five and all the usual shopping channels without having to send off for a new viewing card. At a later date you can phone Sky and re-subscribe if you wish too.
