confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
Basically I want a DVD recorder. I have done a little research on the internet and have come across websites going on and DVD-R,DVD+R,DVD-RW and DVD+RW.Then I`ve read the DVD-Rs are not that friendly and that discs that you record may not work on other machines etc etc.
I have also gone to websites that sell DVD recordable players to see how much they cost but they don`t tell me which of the above they do (e.g. DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW)
I thing I want a DVD+RW recorder that can play multi region as well.
Any help or suggestions would be brilliant
Thanks
Positively confused

That is utter nonsense. The only way a home recorded -R disc will not play on the vast majority of machines is if the recordee has forgotten to finalise the disc.
I have a -R disc of our daughter,recorded by digital camera onto a -R using a Panasonic E50 recorder.
This disc has been passed around the family.I`ve lost count of how many people have watched it on umpteen different makes of machines ranging from the cheap and nasty yingtongyiddleayepoh makes to reputable makes. Not one person has complained about it not playing.
We also have a local `supplier of back-up DVD`s` ;)
What does he use ?
-R`s...
By all means choose a +R recorder, but don`t swallow the crap you`ve rea about -R.
As I`ve stated before,-R is the chosen recordable format of JVC,Panasonic and Sony.If it`s good enough for them, it`s good enough for me.
All the foregoing is true, but don`t forget that -R is a write once only format. If you intend to use the DVD recorder in the same way as a VHS recorder and want to record and re-record using the same disc, then you`ll have to go for either +RW, DVD-RAM of -RW, (although I don`t think there are too many recorders supporting -RW at the moment).

GW6UFO is QRT at the moment
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
The JVC M1 supports -RW.
I already own a Panny E50, but when that inevitably gets moved to another room,I will be getting the JVC.
It does everything.
RAM for day to day recording, for your own use only, with the option of time-slip etc.
-R for permanent recording that can be leant out ( i.e. films )
-RW for repeatable recording that can be leant out ( i.e. bike races for mates )
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
-R is about 9% more compatible than +R.But in practice both should play in modern players.
I believe only the new Pioneer models offer the new compatible version of -RW.The JVC has the same old version where playback means finalising the disc and no more use.The new Pioneer can unfinalise discs for reuse.
Personally,if you can afford it,a HDD/DVDR combo beats everything
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
Should un-finalised -R or +R discs be able to play on other players or do they have to be finalised first?
Peter
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
Was in Comet and the sales person told a Woman not to buy the Panasonic E50, but get the Philips instead if she intends to play the discs on other players or lend them to friends.
I think I would have gone for the Panny myself
Oscar.
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
The words `Comet`, `sales person` and `advice` just don`t compute..... ;)
I think Panasonic may be interested to hear Comet`s staff are telling customers rubbish like this....
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
I`ve found I can`t play DVD-Rs on my Philips DVDR880, despite the fact that the manual says it should be able to. No surprises there, then!!
RE: confused about DVD+R/RW recorders
Axe-man, maybe the -R`s you are trying to play aren`t finalised by the owner ?
It should be able to play them no probs, but they must be finalised.I`ve loaned out finalised -R discs to all of my family.
They play perfectly on a veritable compendium of machines.
Not one rejection.
In cidentally,my Panny E50`s spec says it shouldn`t be able to play +R`s, but it does when they are datawrite ones !
All very strange...
