How can I improve the Picture? Please Help!

Ben_Franklin (Competent) posted this on Monday, 8th January 2001, 17:20

I need some advice on whether I can improve my picture on my television. Please bare with me as I try and explain!

I have a Sony Dav-S300 player, running through a brand new Philips 28inch Widescreen Television. The picture on it is good, but I don`t feel that it`s sharp enough.

I have compared this on my other television, a standard Philips 28inch, which has a Grundig 210a runnning on it. On this the picture is letterboxed, and although it can appear grainy on flat colours the picture is very sharp and looks brilliant.

Both DVD players are being ran through Scart Leads, but do you think if I ran my Sony Player into the S-Video socket I`d get a notice-ably improved picture? Are there any other options?

Also, because it would be a Sony Dav-S300 I`m running, which has a Sub and speakers, am I right in thinking I wouldn`t need any audio cables as well as an S-Video cable?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

It looks to me that u have just discovered the Sony trademark to make the picture a little less sharp, so it would hide some faults in the picture on the lower quality DVD`s.

I`ve heared it does some good on Sony TV`s but goes for the worse on other brands. So I don`t think the S-video connection will help you out.

You`ll probably have to live with it.
Or u can return it, ask for a refund and go for the JVC TH-A10R or the Pioneer NS-DV55 (although they are little bit more expensive I imagine, especially the JVC)..

Look v. deeply into the manual for the TV - sometimes hidden in the fine detail is a little feature called "noise reduction" - they don`t mean sound in this case, but vision, and all they do is curtail the Freq response of the Video signal....

If you can find it - try turning it off ( My TV was factory preset "on") - but it wasn`t Sony.

The player i have has 3 settings for the picture sharpness i use the middle one [on my machine its hidden in optional settings]it makes alot of difference and use the scart.my player is REC 3000

Some tv,s have a sharpness control either in the on screen menu or at the back of the machine.

I have messed around with the television settings, and haven`t been able to find the `noise reduction`, but I will have to get the manual out and see if I can find it.
I`ve also had the TV menus up to see if I can improve the picture, with sharpness and colour etc. but it doesn`t seem to be much better. I`ve tried an S-video lead, although it isn`t a good one, and I think the picture has improved slightly so I might get a better one.
Other than that I really don`t know what to do. Thanks to everyone who has helped so far.
