Widescreen TV- what shall I go for?

acmoore (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 13th February 2003, 14:57

I`m just about to take the plunge. I`ve 450 quid to spend, or thereabouts, and I really don`t know whether to go for the JVC AVR25EKS, X25 100hz model of the same name, or an LG telly, or a Sony- is it really worth getting Dolby pro-logic? (I don`t want to start buying separates) or is a 100hz telly without DPL a better option?
I`m almost certainly going to purchase from AJelectronics (Edgeware Road, London) as I`ve read that they`re v.good.
Any advice very much appreciated,
AC
P.S. I meant to say that I`ve got a budget DVD player (Pacific 1002), if that`s important.

Don`t know the TV`s personally, but I bought a JVC 28" Flatscreen/Nicam 50Hz last year and have absolutely no complaints. Paid about £450 from empiredirect.co.uk, had the TV within 2 days (well would have if I`d been around when they tried to deliver it).

I have the JVC AV25R28-EKS
Man, I`m delighted with it.
Pros are
1/ Picture quality is outstanding.Loads of adjustment and handy features.
2/ The sound is amazing. A sub, L+R and centre speaker makes all the difference and you simply must pay the extra £40 for the optional SPR100 JVC rear speakers. The DVD sound on DPL then becomes brilliant. It`s as good a surround sound as my old set with a seperate Sony HTK215 surround system plugged in.Same sort of power and no bulky subwoofers to try and hide.
3/ It looks brilliant. Makes my `old` Hitachi widescreen Tv look so dated. In fact it makes most other TV`s look dated !
4/ Best remote I`ve used. Big and simple ( bit like myself..)

Cons
Only one really. The picture can have a marked tilt. The picture can visibly slope upwards from left to right. Most noticeable on text or programmes with a text banner across the bottom like Sky sports or something. If you get a good one, great. If you get one with a marked tilt in the picture either send it back and try again ( Unbeatable offer a 21 day no-quibble returns policy ) or get a local JVC engineer to come out and manually adjust the picture by taking the casing off and fiddling with something called ` The coil `.

Interestingly, the non-DPL 28 incher ( AV25T28EKS ) and the 32 incher with DPL ( AV32R25EKS ) both offer a tilt adjustment on the menu to fix this problem without the need for engineers or trying another set.God only know why the 28 incher with DPL doesn`t. Weird.

I should actually be on commission from JVC or unbeatable. They`ve sold 2 additional sets on the strength of people seeing mine. They simply can`t believe they can get a £699 ( comet ) Tv for £470.

Good luck

Cheers chaps. Does this tv come in black?, as her indoors says she doesn`t like silver! In fact, she doesn`t like tv`s, but admits she might be converted by a tv with good sound.
Will be buying the JVC (R25EK) this weekend from AJelectronics for 470 quid- anyone know a better price?
Cheers

Bowf, I`ve ordered my JVC AV28R25 telly which comes on wednesday (v.excited!). Apropos the optional SPR100 rear surround speakers, do they connect to springclip sockets or what? Alaso what`s the subwoofer like? Is it worth getting the JVC powered sub?
Any other info about this telly much appreciated- can`wait for it to arrive...
Cheers, AC

Just bought a JVC AV28R25 myself and can echo everything Bowf says. You won`t be disappointed My local Tesco was selling this model for £529 off the shelf, so I got John Lewis to price match and picked up the free 5 year warranty. Have also ordered some SPR100s and can`t wait for them to arrive. Enjoy!

Hi Seymour,
Well done!
I`m paying 470 quid 4 my telly (AJ Electronics) and have now ordered the SPR100 speakers for 30 quid. I only get a years guarantee though- boo-hoo. D`you think I`ve done well, price-wise? Does JVC fix the tv if something goes wrong, or is this the retailer`s responsibility? I`ve heard something about tilits with this telly??
Ciao, (assuming you`re Italian?)

The standard price for this telly seems to be about £650. High street prices seem to be £600 ish. Online prices start at around £460 excluding delivery (Empire Direct? No thanks!) and in total seem to come in at around £500-£550. I couldn`t believe my luck when I saw it in Tesco (they must have bought a one-off tranche of them) which allowed me to get the JL price-match. JL sell it for £599, but based on their `never knowingly undersold` thing, should have dropped the price after I bought mine. I don`t think they did! IMHO buying from John Lewis is always a great thing to do, as you get the free 5 year warranty (Comet charge £190 for this) and JL`s customer service is second to none. If its not right, they will change it for you. JL only price match to high street shops, not web-sites by the way. Whatever, best of luck with it.

Sorry, what`s IMHO?
AJ Electronics seem to be very good and honest and have graet reviews. Call me old-fashioned, but I always like to meet a company face to face, as I`ve heard many negative things about Unbeatable and other website retailers.
Trust you haven`t had any problems with this so-called "tilt", unlike Bowf?
