Help required please for DD/DTS System purchase

Craig b (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 6th January 2003, 03:39

Hi
Please can anybody help me to find a decent(ish) surround sound speaker system.
The equipment i have got at the minute is as follows:-
T.V = Toshiba 28WD98B
DVD Player = Mico Clasica 20
I am aware that the t.v is Dolby Digital,as that is the reason that i bought it.At the time,i was just discovering dvd and the option of buying a t.v with built in dolby digital seemed like a good idea. Now i realise that the sound i am getting is not as good as it should be.
What i am looking for is a home cinema kit that can "do" Dolby Digital and D.T.S.
I have a budget of £350.
Please feel free to reccommend systems with players or just amp and speakers.
Iknow i,m asking a lot but any advice would be very welcome
Many thanks in advance
Craig
P.S My living room is about 15ft by 12ft.I mention this because i don,t really have much idea about system power (wattage) V Loudness,Clarity etc.
One final thing!!,I have recently bought some rolling stones cds that are S.A.C.D,although they play fine in my stereo. What would i need to hear the sacd layer?

There are a lot of package systems around at the moment which carry all that you are looking for, which i think would be your best option for your buget.

Sony do a number systems which also support s.a.c.d ,as this is what you need to play your s.a.c.d disks.

Richer sounds currently have on offer :

Sony DAV S300 Multiregion at £349
Sony DAV S400 Multiregion at £299
Sony DAV S550 Multiregion at £???

But its always best to look around and Most importantly have a demo.

I`ve put a number of web sites that i think offer good service and value below.

Hi

Just a query really about your current TV with the built in Dolby Digital?
My parents are after a new TV because they had a dvd player for xmas. They are also interested in surround sound as well but my Mother has a thing about having speakers all over the place...bless.

So I figured that a TV with DD built in would kinda solve this problem apart from the rears of course. I`ve been looking at the specs on a Panasonic 28 with DD & DTS for £759.

Now do these tv`s have subs built into them and would the surround effect be `good enough` for my olds, if you know what I mean?

By the way I have a Yamaha VS10 connected to my DVD and think it does the job brilliantly. Don`t know if you can still buy em or not??

Evolution
Many thanks very much for your reccommendations and list of websites.I will certainly have a look at them all.I,m particually pleased that i won`t have to get a dedicated sacd player.

Leigh
I don,t know about the Panasonic but my Toshiba does not have a sub. However i have been generally very pleased with the performance of the surround sound and the bass, especially when playing a dvd.In fact my Wife (bless her) will never understand in a million years why i want to upgrade to a dedicated speaker system. It is for that reason that i haven`t told her!!!!

Craig, I have just taken delivery of the Pioneer DCS303, the spec is as follows:
Multi region
450W (6 x 75W)
Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Logic II
Optical in (useful if you ever upgrade to Sky+).
Looks beautiful as well.

The sound and picture are awesome, I especially like DPL II which gives you 5.1 DD effects from stereo sound tracks. This means you can almost
have 5.1 sound quality from your video tapes, Sky movies or any Nicam source. DPL II also has the same impact on music, you can select on the machine whether you are listening to movies or music.

I paid £331 inc P&P from www.24-7electrical.co.uk. This included a free pair of speaker stands. I also spotted it yesterday at www.tottenhamcourtroaddirect.co.uk for £306 inc P&P, depends how much you want the speaker stands. Both prices are within your budget.

Hope this helps.

Hi
Very many thanks for all your advice.I finally went for the pioneer dcs-303 after deciding that the sacd thing wasn,t a major issue.
I have to say that is an awesome bit of kit and would readily reccommend it to anyone on a similar budget.
Once again my sincere thanks to Evolution,Leigh h and telboy10 for all your help.
Craig
