Watching Reigon 1 on Aiwa 370 and general picture qulality issues

stuey c (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 20th December 2000, 21:48

I don`t know if it`s my eyes or not, but when I`m watching DVDs (mainly reigon 1 but also some reigon 2) I can see very faint horizontal lines on the screen. Are reigon 1 DVDs poorer quality when watched in Europe?

I am only using cheap basic SCART leads - might the picture improve if I get Gold ones or is there a setting in SETUP that I need to adjust? I tried Pseudo PAL OFF but I`m not really sure whether it made a difference.

Also, which is the best setting to choose on the back - Auto, NTSC or PAL - does it make a difference?

Thanks

My 370 setup is as follows

switch set to PAL
from the menu video set to composite
use a scart cable

However i did set it to s video from the remote and connected via the scart cable and did get screen break up ( the manual says no to do this - had to give it a go any way )
When i used the s video cable all was ok - the picture quality through scart cable with the correct setting is great as well

Have used a few region 1 dvd`s and the picture is s*** hot and if i ever meet Jimbo i`ll buy him a few pints for the great advice .

I`ll hold ya to that..and remember I`m Scottish! :oÞ

Anyways, I can set mine both ways, Component or Svid and get great pictures through a standard scart.

However, possibly your eyes are picking up the difference between NTSC and PAL format?
I know I could see horizontal lines on pictures when I was in the States a couple of years ago.

Should I get a gold SCART lead then - can you tell the difference?

I think my Madonna - Immaculate Colection DVD bought about a year ago might just be poor quality!

Buy a decent scart lead ( not a B&Q £2.99 special ) and if your TV has 2 scart sockets try swapping the scart lead into the other socket .

I had these faint lines when I had a scan player, not in RGB but in standard AV mode, I turned something off in the audio menu to fix it.

cant remember what it was though:(

I don`t see any lines but I have noticed very slight `jerks` or `judders` occasionally on my region 1 X-Men disc. Presumably this is to do with the different number of frames per second with NTSC. It`s not very noticable and only happens infrequently. Other than that, the picture quality is just as good and PAL discs. Any comments on this `juddering` business.

I have my Aiwa set to Auto and am using component video on the scart but I also get the same effect on the S-Video connection.

By the way, I too owe Jimbo a pint.

Try setting the switch to PAL only...see if that helps..works with mine! :o)
