Alba 108

scouser (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 29th August 2002, 15:20

I bought the Alba 108 from my local Argos and I`m very happy with it - except for one small problem. It won`t play some of my discs (Gladiator, Pearl Harbour and Bridget Jones). When I try to play these, the screen flickers and it`s unwatchable. I rang the Alba helpline and the woman I spoke to said that the problem was probably with the discs. However, I have played all of these discs on the DVD on my computer with no problems. I was just wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem and what they did to rectify it. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

The problem you`re probably experiencing is cheap-player-itis

A few months ago, I bought a bush DVD2013 from Argos for my sister, apart from it can`t be hacked, Shrek won`t play, and it won`t even recognise Charlie`s Angels.

A problem you`ll discover with the cheapies are they have difficulty handling DVD`s with a lot on them. (The DTS sountrack on Gladiator is probably doing the dirty on that one)

the alba is a good player, but they should have a little sticker on the box saying "Before buying a DVD, rent it first to see if the bugger will play in this machine"

Hi

I have just seen your posting and i have the Alba and the disks

Gladiator which i will try and let you know

and Pearl Harbour which is on as i type and looks ok no problems.

Are you sure you are using the correct settings [ rgb / comp ?]

my tv can do all so no problems but you can get a flickering with the wrong setting.

Anyway i will play the 2 mentioned above and will post back here the result sometime late tonight.

bye

Ours has played everything we`ve thrown at it, including VCD`s and a rented copy of Gladiator. Sorry to hear about your problem - I`d ask Argos for a replacement, especially if it`s within 16 days.

Hi

I have just finished watching the Gladiator and had no problems with the main film disk and had a quick luck at the other disk which worked ok.
The film Pearl Harbor worked fine as did the other disk which i had a quick look at as well.

I would check that you are connected to the correct scart if using a tv with more than 1 as they are not all wired the same.
Or is the ntsc set on but your using a pal disk ?[ i get fuzzy text if i do that.]

bye

I can confirm the Alba 108 will play Gladiator (just finished watching it).
I`d check your settings are correct like others have said, if all ok get the player replaced.

Yeah mine is fine - get it back to Argos and get it replaced or repaired.

Thanks for all your suggestions. It turns out I just had it wired up wrong! My boyfriend had a look at it and now it plays all my dvds perfectly. :)
