SKY +

I`m interested in buying the SKY + system but don`t want to shell out £300 & then find out sky have knocked £100 off or start giving them away. I got stung with the digiboxes that way !! A thoroughly nice but dim chap in Curry`s told me that sky would never drop the price of the unit as they are making a £500 loss on every one they sell!!! They have an agreement with PACE that they will not sell them cheaper ever !!!! I find this hard to believe. He also said they were unlikely to be upgraded so there`s no point waiting for a bigger hard disc or something. Any thoughts folks ?

Tosh!
Absolute Tosh!
I cannot imagine Sky losing money on anything. Can you?
If you have got the patience to wait, I suggest you do that
One thing is for certain: eventually Sky WILL be giving them away, when a sufficient enough number of mugs start buying them, thereby subsidizing them for those who waited

I`m not sure of the accuracy of this so take it with a pinch of salt:

Was there not a recent news article about Pace agreeing to provide Sky with the boxes at a loss so that Sky could sell them for less. The deal was that Pace would make up the loss from Sky depending on subscriptions etc.

Standard digiboxes cost sky about £300, so work out how much they lose on that, + boxes are more expensive so they prob still make a loss.

Of course Sky could make a loss. It`s similar to the console market where manufacturers lose money on each console sold - but they recoup it on games sales/royalties. For each XBOX (£200) I think Microsoft lose about £100 or more. Similar business model I think. Lose upfront but get it back on subscriptions (plus your £10/month!)

I`m in the same boat.
I want one but I ain`t shelling out £300 + £10 a month forever and ever amen...
That`s a rip off in anyone`s language.
SKY are full of crap. They claim they " cannot keep up with demand " for SKY+ boxes but do you know anyone who`s got one ?
I know 20+ people with SKY. They in turn each know roughly 10 people with SKY.
Not ONE of these people has SKY+ so who are SKY kidding ??
They are bound to reduce the price. Bound to.
I`ve been stung like you. I had to pay £220 for a silver box because the black one they gave me look like a boil on the arse of my AV stand.
IMHO SKY should make it EITHER a on off £300 payment OR £10`s a month, not both. That`s criminal. They make me seeth.....

There`s no way the digi boxes cost £300-00. A very decent free to air Digital box with more stations than sky 2000 to 4000. Plus Diseq(meaning it can control a movable dish). Bigger bandwidth & much more, for £150-00. In the shops. Take away the retailer`s profit, take away the Midleman`s, profit, & your down to the price Sky would pay (but for a much lesser spec digibox). You can work out the REAL price of them from that.

I`m glad I made this post. I was seconds away from parting with my hard earned wonga. Sky are just playing the digital age game & getting what they want. I`d welcome a real competitor to Sky & sit back watching the price of subscriptions & hardware fall like the FTSE 100 !!!!!!

Same with anything like this though, isn`t it? You pay a premium to be an "early adopter". I like the idea of Sky +, and admit to be tempted, but it just seems like rather a lot of moolah. I don`t need it THAT much......
