Wharfedale 28" W/S TV - CTV-850
Hi.
Anybody any first hand experiences of this set? I`ve only seen one review.
Am I the only one p*ssed off by the lack of decent size w/s televisions/monitors - without a sh*t-load of features (on-board Pro-logic, speakers and even a tuner) that a lot of us can live without - at a fair price??
I can`t afford a projector or plasma set up but would kill for a fairly priced decent 32" or 36" w/s television WITHOUT the speaker/processing/tuner stuff that I`d never use.
There are SO many "spec`d up" sets that surely manufacturers could include a bare essentials version....and clean up!
Lo
I too think i`m gonna get one of these from Tescos. The only review I`ve seen was from the link on the Wharfedale site. I did notice the problems that it had with the anamorphic side of things.
However, I was in Tescos yesterday and saw that they now have a 890 model in stock as opposed to the 850. I have searched the net for reviews or even a mention of this, but the Wharfedale site has not ben updated. As it is still the same price, and looks to hav ethe same spec., I presume its just a newer version (like the DVD750 and 750s). Perhaps this model has sorted out the problems mentioned in the review. I think I`ll buy one next week so will let you know what its like.

Asked Wharfedale about the changes on the 890. Basically thev`ve responded to the ctiticisms in the DVD Times review and installed a new tuner and resolved the minor problem with the setup. They`ve also updated the chassis (or whatever you`d call the black box which surrounds the screen!.
These adjustments must make it the only real contender at the price. I`ve heard Asda have a Scneider in the same price range but haven`t seen any reviews. I`ve been told to steer clear of a cheap model by Bush. Also very impressed with Wharfedale customer service in the past (hifi speakers/components). The 890 is on my list to Santa.
£280 is one hell of a price for 28" widescreen - I`d be wary of that, but my £100 matsui has lasted loads longer than the £350 sony that preceded it :-)
Who has reviewed it? If anyone here buys one, I`m sure we would all like to know if it`s really any good.
I saw a recent review of the Asda Schneider and it was very positive. I`ll dig it out tonight and let you know what it said. I think it was in What Hifi.
Got the same response from Wharfedale today as SImian.
We`re off to see one now....I`ll let you know if it passes the missus` "taste" test!!
I saw this very cheap tv but cant find any info on it?
What video did a review of the WS32W6 in Nov 99 with a price of £1100!!!!!! They said "Breathtaking in every department"
I cant find the bloody issue!!

Lo
Just bought the Wharfedale 890 today. Out of the box it looks fine and setting it up was no probs. The quality of the terrestial channels seems excellent (as in the review it was stated that these weren`t great). There are 4 choices of viewing area and you can customise sound and picture easily. There are presets in the sound setup for movies, speech, music etc or you can use User for your own prefs. There are also presets for the picture, ie daylight, night, soft.
It is a big improvement on my measly 21" TV. Speakers are 2x8rms and are OK for me (I live in a terrace house) Though the bass isn`t strong enough for my liking. I put the volume to what I would consider to be loud and it was only half way on the osd, so, I think its adequate.
I have a Wharfedale 750s DVD and you get an excellent picture and sound and colours seem very good.
Overall I am very pleased and would definitely recommend it considering the price. I`m sure you could get better, but you`d have to spend another couple of hundred quid!
The only niggle I have so far concerns my cable viewing. When you change between channels with the TV remote its fast and quiet. However when I`m watching cable and am using the NTL remote, you get a noise and the volume is loud for about a second when you change channel. I don`t know if this is something to do with the Nicam stereo as it didn`t happen on my other TV. I might have something not connected right or something. On the whole I am well pleased.

RE: Wharfedale 28" W/S....now CTV-890
We bought last night.
Agree with everything above!....except can`t comment on the cable/NTL (`cos we don`t have that!!)
All things are relative I know but I think I`d find it hard to see/hear/justify (all) the extra money on another manufacturers set....
Maybe(?) other sets get one or two stars more in lab. tests but just sitting there watching it I`m thinking "Wow....this is just what I was after".
does it have audio outputs? the last model didn`t, wondered what the connections were.
