It is in helping people realise that there is a global shortage, assuming you can trust the stats.
That's quite a positive release that you link to, just a shame that there appears to be a massive backlog of HGV licence applications at DVLA.

Anyone with a HGV license received a letter the other day, myself included, from the DoT (FTA/Logistics). Both thanking curent drivers for keeping their end up during the Covid pandemic, but also begging anyone who has a license, but isn't currently driving, to come back into the fold.

That's all great and everything, but there are consequences for pay rises (particularly when they are not aligned with productivity increases).
We use delivery companies a lot. In the last year the costs have already pretty much doubled. A year ago we were charged about £18-£22 for our average consignment, now it's £34+
Material costs have jumped too (metal in our case). The future is looking expensive.
I am in the process of putting up our prices as I type.
