That was before my universe existed. Had a quick google, and numerical confirmation that the Labour govt of Wilson shut down more pits than Thatcher. Also read opinions of different reasons, a post war shortage of manpower, and uneconomical mines for Wilson, versus a war on the unions for Maggie.

It wasn't simply a war on the Unions, although let's face it, they were well out of control for the previous decade or so - and Scargill called an illegal strike, so the Government were well within their rights to try and break it. The mines were uneconomical, similar to much public spending - why do we pay more for less return?
We can argue over whether more could have been done, I would tend to agree with you - however, most miners simply wanted to carry on mining, as evidenced on the last PSB album, so I don't think it would have mattered what they did...
