Interestingly on new low slung sports cars, if you hit the tree, or a bollard or a pedestrian at 10 MPH and set off the bumper sensors, it will cost you well over £7000 to repair the damage.
The reason is new pedestrian hit protection on sports cars and has hidden 'one off use' parts that need to be replaced, just like airbags.
The devices are hidden under the bonnet hinges and have explosive rams that lift the back of the bonnet around four inches, to protect a pedestrians head from hitting the engine lump under the thin metal bonnet, and also lets a pedestrian fly over the windscreen, to make a crash more survivable.
Some owners are angry that just hitting the bumper, will cost them a fortune if the bonnet 'explodes', and insurances may not stump up for replacement parts.
Cars already in the country with this system is the new Mazda MX5 MK4, and the Nissan GT-R, and other makes will follow with this technology.
