YouTube to block indie labels as subscription service launches

YouTube will remove music videos by artists such as Adele, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead, because the independent labels to which they belong have refused to agree terms with the site.
Google, which owns YouTube, has been renegotiating contracts as it prepares to launch a music subscription service.
A spokesperson for the indie labels said YouTube was making a "grave error of commercial judgment".Billy Bragg has had a moan about it, but he would wouldn't he ;)

not sure if the "Indies" are cutting off their noses to spite their faces, or making a genuine stand against big boy bullying tactics. I guess google assumed they'd just roll over and take it :(

At least one of the "I'm quitting YouTube" people I used to frequent is back, after not making enough money outside of it I guess. I suspect the same will happen with indies, as YouTube is such a major way to get your music across to fans.
Billy Bragg can no doubt afford to take a moral stand against it, but lesser well known artists probably have a lot less of a choice if they want to get their stuff heard.

Interesting, they are adding Fan Funding (I guess they saw Patreon as a threat)...

Good idea I think.

Star Wars video gets copyright claim from Warner for using their music...
https://www.wired.com/story/the-star-wars-video-that-baffled-youtubes-copyright-cops
The thing is, that video actually doesn't use any music (well maybe 3 seconds of it near the end), plus was manually flagged:

I have had to remove many a Youtube video due to the 3rd party music copyright, even years after the video had been up. it is actually stupid for the musician as they cut their own throat doing this, as they were getting free publicity. I used to use Mike Oldfield music in the background, and many a viewer had commented who's music is it, and I would tell them. But not now as I use Australian ethnic music not known in their automated copyright files (at the moment).
Unfortunately copyright battles and fighting payable websites is going to be the way of the internet from now on.
Only in the last year three of the websites I visit has went payable, Photobucket photo sharing which I had to unsubcribe from as they wanted £310 a year, and a car forum that I was on went payable where well over two thirds of the car owners packed in the website and its closed down since, and also a 'text to speech' website which I use for site safety training video talkovers, suddenly added tinkly music over the voice, unless you paid to remove music.I refuse to pay for any website.
So these creeping trends will end up finishing the internet for people that do not want to pay or more likely do not have the money to pay. Its bad enough paying a monthly subscription to your internet provider.
With tin foil hat on, Conspiracy wise, I think this will be just a sneaky way to try reducing those using the internet in the future.

Finally YouTube launch a premium service in the UK:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-44522200
And then price it more than Netflix and Amazon Prime, at £11.99 a month.
I'm starting to think the new Google is the old Microsoft.

The BBC says...
"Two new shows are being launched to coincide with the wider rollout:
F2 Finding Football - the two British hosts of F2 Freestylers, which is described as YouTube's most popular football channel, explore the sport's cultural impact around the world
The Sidemen Show - an existing group of seven YouTube videomakers from the UK are posed challenges by a number of celebrities, in a programme described as being a mix of The Inbetweeners and Top Gear"
Well that will bring the subscribers rolling in...

If you choose to pay Amazon Prime monthly it's £7.99. But look at what else you get for the money. Twitch (which I've never been on) Amazon video which includes quite a lot of their own financed programs, their music service, & next day delivery. Oh & Amazon Read which gives the subscriber free content using the Kindle app.
And Google want more money.
Not for me, well not yet anyway.
