" Detectives are questioning a householder on suspicion of murder after an intruder was stabbed to death at his home.
Two men reportedly forced their way into the house of Vincent Cooke, 39, and threatened him before one of the assailants suffered fatal knife injuries.
Mr Cooke was initially home alone at the time in Bramhall, Stockport, but his wife, Karen, and their 12-year-old son returned during the incident. They managed to escape unharmed.
Police were called to the scene in Midland Road at about 7.50pm yesterday and along with paramedics gave first aid to the injured intruder thought to be aged in his late 30s but he died shortly after.
Floral tributes to the dead man - referred to as "Ray" and "Raymondo" - were left today by his family members outside the large detached house. One tribute read: "Love you son. Going to miss you more than anything."

Well, this will test Ken Clarke`s self-defence policy to the hilt (excuse the pun)...

They talk about a self-defence policy, but the Police will always have to go through the motions and arrest the householder on suspicion of murder, and grill them for a couple of days before releasing them without charge. Which is exactly what they did before Ken Clarke woke up and started oinking.
And if I was the householder, I`d find floral tributes left to the bloke who had broken into my house and threatened me with a knife more than slightly sinister.

I`m all behind people doing whatever it takes to protect there home & family to scum however, you never know if a gangster or whatever, wants to bump someone off & force-ably puts the person there before knifing them.
RE: Floral tributes left for intruder stabbed to death
Precisely, which is why Ken Clarke`s line about self-defence was so much political hot-air and taking credit where none is due. The Police still have to carry out due process and the CPS still has to decide whether there is a case of murder to answer. Nothing`s changed, but old Ken wants us to think he`s putting householders first.

This intruder was a profesional burglar to trade, so will be no big loss. It should send a message to all burglars not to enter other peoples property or risk the consequences.
What really makes me sick of these people who cause misery to law abiding citizens is that their family is behind them in their illegal gains. I remember a few years back about a documentary following this scum, where the burgular gave his wife a note of all houses he would break into that night, so if he got bumped off and body hidden, then his wife noting his absence would inform the police of his breakins that night, so they could visit each house in turn.
As for laws dealing with this and who is right and who is wrong, well if you were unfortunately put in that position of defending your family and yourself, the law is the last thing you would be thinking about, when all hell breaks lose, especially in life and death situtions.
Heres hoping in this case, the owner is cleared quickly, as he must be tramatised by what happened, and what could have happened to his family.

OK, escalation of weaponary could happen, so where would you draw the line ?
Just sit there and accept the consequences ?
They might just kill or torture you and your family anyway if you do nothing and they have a weapon, and that I assume was going through the owners head at the time, before he struck out.
As I said its a difficult senerio to answer, unless you are actually in it, and then you have to make spur of the moment decisions, whether to retaliate or not.

Perfect example of why they should bring back hanging, for people who enter another persons house uninvited with any weapon at all.
