Coallision near collapse on student fee vote
Well not quite, but nearly.
Well it got through by 21 votes, but the lib-dem party is now in tatters over this.
Only six month in power, and there is now such division within the lib-dems. some voting with the conservitives, some abstaining and some voting against.
There principles have gone and left them, and I can see them getting slaughtered in the next by-elections.
There are a lot of angry voters out there.

I`m in New Jersey,USA saw the news on tv , saw it all wow you have every right to be P***ed. Listen in America our good college ask so much money you have no idea how expensive it is. Hope you get what you want. I pray for all. :¦

The Lib`s were in a no win position from the start. So far I`ve been more impressed with the coalition than the last bunch, that near enough ruined this country. I would also send the bill for the cost of all these demonstrations to the students.

But you have to pay for it.
Quite rightly.
Far too many people are attending university in the UK these days, many just as an attempt to defer `real life`.
If paying for their tuition discourages that and turns university back into something for the seriously committed only, great.

Not me.
University never appealed, even if my higher grades could easily have allowed it.
Even back then, I identified many university goers as wasters.
I wanted no part of that, so went into the job market instead.

There were 3 times less people going to University back then, therefore more people working and paying tax. There are 1.75 million less people working now, than there was 10 years ago (Uni, incapacity and unemployment), thats a lot of missed PAYE revenue.
The economics of it have changed; more courses, more lecturers, bigger campusses (campi? lol). The `right` to free university education is a great thought, but it is not affordable anymore.
My son went through Uni, it cost ME a fortune in support and accomodation, yet three of his house sharing mates had grants gallore and quite a nice social life. It`s hardly a basis for forming my opinion on this (but I will anyway ;) ), but the three who were given grants and free funding didn`t finish the course.
Neil.

Of the people I know that went to Uni back when there were grants and no fees, they seem pretty split on the matter.

There has been a lot of talk about Uni`s offering worthless degree courses
No surely the fault lies with the Uni`s and it`s the students who are paying for it

Not really, it was a Government policy/drive to give ALL pupils the opportunity to go to Uni. So, new courses, buildings etc... had to be created to accomodate the policy. What they didn`t reckon on was that the `worthless` courses as you call them would not generate an ultra-skilled workforce that would pump millions back into the economy with high earnings. Couple all that with a highly skilled european workforce edging accross the channel and we find ourselves where we are now...
I don`t have an opinion really on this coalition policy, because someone has to pay and as a tax payer, either way, I`m getting shafted :/
