Yeah sounds good but DOES this mean we all have to get NEW DVD players with the Blue laser or does it run on normal players... Or what I dont know?

The blue laser is part of the DVD hardware, in the laser pickup mechanism. So this would be a new player all together. If it does debut with hidef (as suggested), then it`s a new format, and another chance for Universal to repackage The Mummy.

DVD as it is though is pretty safe for years to come, so it shouldn`t be a concern.

If the format is to be Hi Definition, then surely that will make way for New HiDef Tv`s as current TV`s wouldn`t be able to cope with the higher definition?

If one of the Tv and Video magazines out there are to be believed. The UK market is not going to go Hi Def, as the current digital tv broadcasting etc doesn`t support this. Digital TV believes the future to be in more channels, not better quality viewing?

Does anyone have a roadmap for hidef in the UK? This can get confusing...

I hope that by 2010 (let`s say for arguments sake it`s 2010) we have hidef DVD at around 1050i lines, and widescreen TV`s/projector`s capable of displaying it with an evolved sound system too.

JVC have already produced D-VHS which needs hidef displays anyway, so perhaps by 2010 it`ll be reasonably priced for the High Street.

It seems odd to suggest that the UK is not going to adopt hidef television broadcasting. The BBC have been doing tests for years at the licence payers cost. As with a lot of things, I could blame New Labour for not adopting a sensible policy on the future of digital broadcasting...

Mind you, can you imaging watching the abundance of crap on more digital channels, only it`s all hidef so it looks that bit better. Better looking crap...

Me hopes that they will sort out the DVD recorder issues BEFORE they start releasing new DVD format disks...mind you, if the encoding is the same, couldn`t they just replace the drive mech & old laser with the new one?

The encoding is only the same in that it`s ones and zeros. :-) The discs house more `pits` closer together which is why the blue laser (shorter wavelength) is needed. Apparently studios already make a hidef digital master for DVD so it`s not a problem to master for hidef DVD.
