General Forum
I want to lose a little weight and find that fruit, salads etc do not satisfy my hunger like a sausage roll or Snickers would. Therefore I want to try and eat sensibly but also not be hungry all the time.
Exercise is also an issue for me as I am asthmatic and can`t run for longer than 5 minutes.
In spite of what everyone says about exercise, the best way to lose weight is to eat less food. Exercise helps but you need to do so much that for most people it is pointless. When I lost weight I ate less food every day but once a week would eat things I liked (not pig out though). Nowadays we tend to have diet days. So on a Monday, Wednesday & Friday we always eat small portions. The rest of the week we eat what we want, rarely do we pig out though. We do go for 2 `fast` walks a day, ie not a wander around but get the heart moving. Swimming is also good.

RE: Any nutrition boffins around?
I`ve been losing weight for a year now, and the basic equation applies I`m afraid. Eat less, exercise more. And I hate exercise.
But if you exercise, then you don`t have to watch what you eat so much beyond the overall calorie count. I could still enjoy a cheese sandwich and a chocolate bar as long as I`m burning a few hundred calories a day. Apparently the human body at rest needs 2000 calories a day. I`ve been keeping my intake to around that, maybe a few hundred less. But I have also been exercising on top of that. Which in my case means doing something that I won`t get bored with quickly. The easiest thing I found is as Paul says, walking. At my peak weight loss I was walking five miles a day, six days a week. I`m closer to my target weight now, and I`m exercising less and differently, sit ups and push ups to get rid of the bulge around my gut, some weights to add some muscle mass, and still walking. I`m still eating what I want, just less of it.
A couple of weeks ago, I did my shoulder in, and had to stop exercising until it heals. I`ve noticed that I haven`t lost any weight in that time (Haven`t gained any thankfully), But I realise that if I cut down on my food more for any length of time, then I`ll be missing out on nutritional necessities. Just cutting down on food alone won`t do it when it comes to weightloss.
If it`s any motivation, my dad`s asthmatic, has been for the last thirty odd years, and no one I know is as active as he is, always walking, always doing something, always keeping busy, and consequently eating so much that I think he has a tapeworm. He just makes sure he always has his inhalers.

RE: Any nutrition boffins around?
Bezza - (this may sound like a weight watchers ad, but it`s the truth)...I lost 3 stone in 3 months by eating healthily, not following Weight Watchers :D
My wife and I tended to eat whatever we wanted without any concerns about weight etc.
The weight became quite noticeable after I went to New York for 5 weeks for work (my wife came too) and I continued to eat stupid amounts.
I came back from there just before Christmas 2006 I think, and at that point I was 18st 2 lbs (6ft3in tall).
My wife bought the Gillian McKeith book (I know, I know, she`s a revolting woman, but the nutritional benefits of the recipes are proven in my opinion) and we started eating meals from that.
We also changed breakfast habits which I think made a big difference. We started making our own muesli and having that for breakfast (not one of Gillian McKeith`s things).
I also made sure I took vitamin supplements (Wellman tablets) to make sure I wasn`t missing out on anything (even though I probably had about 10 portions of fruit/veg a day).
By the beginning of April I was 15st3lbs.
I`ve gone up and down a little since then, but currently 14st12lbs and it`s all down to my diet (I can`t be arsed with exercise).
We haven`t eaten a Gillian McKeith recipe for quite some time, but we`re just careful about everything we eat. It`s made easier by the fact my wife now can`t have wheat, gluten, yeast or refined sugar....so everything is made from scratch and we can control the contents.
I`m pretty convinced that it`s processed food that`s causing a lot of people`s weight issues, but the convenience of processed food is often too good an option.

Try things that will fill you up and then release energy over long periods of time, muesli is a good thing as people have suggested a small portion is very filling and lasts a while so hopefully should stop the hunger snacks. However watch which ones you buy as some contain a lot of sugar. If you can and have the time make your own that way you can add the dried fruits that you like.
Other things that are worth looking into if you really want something different are rice crackers you can get ones that are fairly healthy and should plug the hunger hole.
Nuts and dried fruit is another good one but again try to limit the intake and select ones that are lower in fat and sugar e.g. cashews and pistachios are really bad

if you really want something different are rice crackersI`ve recently discovered these (due to the wife`s wheat intolerance) and I love them! Sainsburys have some with sea salt and balsamic vinegar and they`re brilliant.
Cheers guys. I thinks its snacks (and beer!) thats my downfall mainly. Typically I eat a bowl of shreaded wheat bitesize for breakfast. A wrap of cheese and ham (no mayo or butter), Muller yoghurt and bag of crisps for lunch and then dinner of whatever my wife makes (9 times out of ten its a "meat and two veg" meal, we are quite fussy eaters and avoid spicy stuff like currys). We are quite good in terms of quality in what we eat and avoid things like burgers, sausages, microwave meals etc.
I will find myself getting hungry at about 10 oclock though and craving sugar later in the day (I`m not diabetic as was tested recently).

Try swimming excellent all round exercise
Makes you hungry too ;)
Can offer no advice on losing weight as I`ve been between 9-10 stone my entire adult life, however on the subject of exercise I think the key is finding something you can do that isn`t too boring.
I quite enjoy cycling, well the going fast bit anyway not so much the uphill thing, and I can jog or use a cross trainer providing I am listening to an iPod.
Maybe find something you can do whilst watching the TV, and slap on a series or something that is alright to watch whilst burning the calories.
