we drive a rover in our house. just lately theres a grinding/shuddering every now and again when stopping. i thought it was brakes but theyve been given clean bill of health. any thoughts, im thinking clutch which could be costly

Clutch failing would be difficulty in changing gear & smell of burning asbestos around the engine area.
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

would have gone with brakes, or if in gear could be gearbox/or diff that will be expensive?
Try it out of gear, if it still does it, will be brake related... take it to another garage for a second opinion.
It`ll be the stairs, but cars arent really designed to be driven in the house. Try it out on the road.

I wouldn`t trust Kwik Fit to be able to distinguish the boot from the bonnet.

Yeh, it could be anything really, worn suspension bushes, steering arms, shock absorber etc etc...

I`d be on either Suspension or gearbox/driveshaft hunts.
Had it been a newer car I would have gone for one of these dual-mass flywheel p-o-scheitte but I don`t think Rover ever used them.
Model and year of Rover may be helpful as might be able to get some diagnostic pointers off me mate.
My thoughts would be:
(If more of a strange groaning/squeak noise) = Suspension parts. Shock absorbers first (normally noticable by wet patches around the thick straight part as they leak), anti- roll bar links (normally a clunk but can groan as the car lurches forward), front springs (cracked, broken or just badly worn)
Gearbox area: Gearbox itself but 9 out of 10 times would cause other noises when driviing too, driveshafts, bent or damaged but generally give a wobble when driving, CV joints.
CV joint test is easy though, find an area the car can U-turn in and put the steering on a lock, drive the car forwards on the lock then the same in reverse. Do it on both a left hand and right hand lock.
If a CV joint has gone you should hear a clicking sound (usually loud).
After that, it`s down to a mechanic methinks. (That`s of course, if the brakes have definitely been ruled out)
