Average Speed Camera`s...

What`s the deal with these then as there the only things on the road at the minute that actually make me stick to the maxium (or even less) speed limit?

I don`t understand though how some cars still go zooming through these zones!  Do they know something I don`t?!  Are they just stupid and think they can slam the breaks on before each of the cameras?!

Has anyone been caught by one of these and do they run 24/7 or just when workmen are working?

24/7 and slamming your brakes on wont work as its speed over a measured distance between the camera sites... yes they do work... No i have not been caught (hopefully)!

Probably fleet/hire cars with drivers who dont care as they believe they wont get caught...

There was a theory that you could evade them by changing lanes as the technology wasn`t clever enough to track you. However, I believe this has been refuted and sounds like rubbish anyway.

A few weeks ago though I was doing 50mph (on cruise control which is the only way to go through these zones I find) and the person in front of me was staying in the left hand lane with me but when he/she approached a camera they would change lanes. They did this for about 5 or 6 cameras and each time swapped between left, middle and right lanes. They were doing 50mph but still felt the need to employ crazy techniques to avoid getting a ticket. Madness.

Theoretically you could go through these 50mph zones at 70mph for a bit if you wanted but only if you then did 30mph for the other half of the distance between cameras which is far too much hassle for my liking.

I haven`t heard of anyone being caught using these cameras though so maybe they are just hoping they are big yellow deterrants and don`t actually work. Either that or the lane changing trick is the way to go!

I would imagine forward facing cameras could be evaded by tailgating, and backward facing ones by being tailgated. Which brings me to the thing I hate most about traffic cameras.

Why can`t we have traffic cameras that catch tailgaters? I refuse to believe technology isn`t capable of it.

Do away with all these cash cows. Speeding don`t cause accidents. Dangerous driving does. The 2 are seldom related.

I dunno, I`d disagree there.

Speeding is a major cause of accidents, when done inappropriately. I`m pretty sure the mere act of exceeding an arbitary speed doesn`t cause someone to get injured, however exceeding a certain speed for a certain situation must significantly increase your chances of causing or being involved in one.

I suspect driving at 30mph in certain situations in a dangerous way would be classed as driving without due care.

I used to use a windscreen mounted GPS "camera" detector to monitor my speed rather than flipping attention between road & speedo, alleviating "speed creep".

Average speed cameras bring out the crazyness in car drivers, and cause more accidents than they are trying to stop.

REASONING....

As stated above, people trying to hide their numberplates by tailgating up the back other cars.

Crossing lanes at camera areas quickly, as though that ever does anything, except cause danger to others.

Suddenly realising they have been going to fast and slow down to 20 miles an hour or less or even stopping for a while on the hard shoulder if they can, to get a lower average speed.

People so fixated with watching their speed on the spedometer that they nearly crash into other cars.

CRAZY !

Can`t say I`ve noticed much of the above actually happening. The last one does however sound plausable, but then I`m not sure it is any different from obeying the speed limit in any other given situation?
