Government Intends To Reward Carers and Disabled With Cuts

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 11th August 2009, 14:05

After so much talk about helping carers and the people they look after, the Government is launching a green paper putting forward its intention to axe the benefits paid to the disabled and their carers and instead pay local authorities to provide services.

That means going cap in hand to your local authority for everything you need and of course there`s absolutely no indication of what they think you might live on if you rely on Attendance Allowance or Carer`s Allowance as your main income.

It`s not as if Carers receive anything like the Minimum Wage for long hours and arduous work.

There`s a campaign to dissuade the Government from cutting these benefits.

Please remember that there are people out there who through no fault of their own have to claim benefits to live. Spongers and crooks are a small minority who spoil the system for the honest people.

But you can bet your backside that local councils will manage to make it hard for the legit cases to get what they are entitled too but somehow manage to shovel it out of windows for those on the scrounge

ALSO

are they actually instructing a move of and a cut in the funding??
Your title says cut, your comments say government moving funding to local councils (implication for them to dish out)

Cuts - axing Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. The money will be then reallocated to funding local government disability initiatives, which I`d take to mean it will be used to pay for thousands of local government civil servants to administer local services.

looks like another kick in the head for carers. i care for my son 24 hours a day 7 days a week so i claim carers allowance of £53.00 a week and as iam a full time carer i have to claim income support. from my income support £53.00 is deducted for my payment of carers allowance. my total income is £160.00 a week and we are struggling to manage if i restart work again and earn over £90.00 my carer`s allownce is stopped. i cannot see any social services taking over my caring for less than £300.00 a week. so if my carers allowance is stopped i ask my local social service`s to take over my caring duties if every carer did the same the social services could not cope with over 6million carer,s doing the same, most councils would need to pay millions out pushing up the council tax to pay for it. good luck to them all.

Geoff, if you earn over £20 a week your benefits will be cut. In typical Nazi style, the benefits system allows you to earn £90pw on top of your CA, but IS rules only allow you to earn £5 a week before you have to give notice about it (and lose money), however, because of carers being included in occupational therapy type rules, the allowance is upped to a "generous" £20 before you lose benefits.

Basically anybody who requires Income Support to eke out benefits is locked into poverty, unable to better their lifestyle because of the draconian means-testing criteria which in my recollection hasn`t changed or improved in twenty years.

I go to my mothers for at least 5 hours a day 7 days a week and I am on call for her 24 hours a day. She only lives 1/2 mile away so I can be with her within minutes.
I struggle on £53 but have no choice as my brother who still lives with her refuses to be her carer as it would cut into his pub time.
