Page 1 of Car tax question

One for the law enforcement section.
Radio ads encouraging you to tax your car state that your covered from the moment you pay online or by phone.
I understood that the offense was failing to display a valid tax disc and the local post office used to make a point of telling you not to put the new disc in until the 1st of the month.
Anybody square this particular circle

Some days it`s just not worth gnawing through the straps
As far as I`m aware, failure to display is an offence. Not sure if this has been rewritten since the buy online/by phone facility was introduced. Personally, I chance it - if I have to!
Yes you can get done for not showing a disc, irrespective of tax status.
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
Heartily glad that I don`t have to learn how to spell Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Good call, as I`m taking my chances on non display penalty from Sunday until Tuesday, because they`ve sent out the form too late so haven`t been able to do it online (needed the code).
I`ve never paid in a Post Office before, but wrongly assumed they no longer needed insurance or MOT certificates as they would just double check against the database the same as the online payment does.
They`ve told me in Post Office they can`t though (whilst giving a look of I know, it`s ridiculous) and don`t know anything about the non-display penalty etc.
I`ve just got to take my chances and hope I don`t get any grief off anyone (think the road cameras just check off number plates or something????).
I`ve got the printout of the receipt anyway and the police can check so hopefully, they won`t be too strict on it if someone does pull me on it.

There always used to be a non-display penalty, and there was the widely promoted myth of a 14 day grace period.
I renewed on-line last month and I am sure that I saw some comment indicating that you were covered if the disc did not arrive in time.
However if I am wrong and you get busted, don`t send me the bill. Check on-line at the dvla.
Thinking more about it, I did call the DVLA last time my tax was up, and was told I MUST display the disc. I think it says so on the renewal form too. However, as I said, I chanced it when I had to drive. ANPR checks against number plate, just make sure you don`t put yourself in a position whereby you`ll get pulled over and the police will thoroughly check your car over. Not condoning breaking the law here though!
The offence is and always has been `failing to display a valid excise license`.

Is it an offence that you would expect everyone to enforce? Espccially if that`s the only thing wrong and I`m not arsey with an officer?
Your answer implies that you would.

If you have renewed on line before it expires, you are allowed 5 days grace.
I thought that you can get done for not displaying, but it looks like that the change of allowing the 5 day grace has only been implemented recently.
Please check on the backside of the renewal notice.

Glad you said that hunsbury.
I renewed at the end of January and so I`ve thrown out the stuff that came with the tax disc now, but I was sure I`d read when I went online that there was this 5 day period as well. My understanding was that as long as you had actually renewed in time then you were OK.
