Anybody here read Kanji letters?

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Friday, 6th June 2008, 20:23

Hi,

I got myself a tattoo about 7 weeks ago and seem to be hooked on it a bit, i only wanted one at first, then i thought it looked a bit bare so i got something else added then a week later another :D

I have got this Japanese theme in my head which i want to get done.

I have been learning to speak Japanese on and off for the past few years but i cant read any of it.....was going to wait until i was more fluent before i started.

I am going to get the Kanji symbol for peace tattooed in with the others but i am a bit confused on which symbol is the correct one.

When i have searched online and asked in a couple of forums how the symbol looks i get this one.......

But the one i want tattooed is this one......

They dont look alike at all and i dont want to get this one until i know for sure its the correct meaning and symbol.

Cheers!

Hi,

The bottom (2nd picture) is Chinese. The top set are Japanese and do mean peace. However, it reads as `wa hey` (phonetically speaking). In order for it to be correct you need to swap the symbols around, i.e. they should read `hey wa`. All of the 3 symbols are the same (just in different fonts). In order for it to read correctly you should swap the top symbol with bottom symbol, i.e. invert them. In Japanese words are written vertically an downwards.

Hope it helps. Good luck with the tattoo.

:D

Thanks kakuzato,

On the second image...you think think they should be swapped around ...bottom to top - top to bottom?

Thanks!

Whoa!

Read Kakuzato`s reply again. The second image is Chinese. The first image has the word you want (set out in three fonts). You want to take the first vertical set of two letters from the first image and put the lower pictogram at the top and the upper one at the bottom for it to read correctly (if I`ve read Kakuzato`s reply properly). :D

Or are you now the proud possessor of a Chinese tattoo? :o

Perfect for one`s arse..

My mate`s first tat was a script of Chinese taken, I kid you not, from a Bruce Lee VHS boxset which runs the length of his forearm. God knows what it says.

The bottom characters look like Mandarin Chinese and are the right way round for `peace`. If you were to swap them they would apparently be the Chinese approximation of the surname `Cunningham` :o

If you`ve got Chinese characters enabled on your computer you should be able to see this:

安宁 = peace
宁安 = Cunningham

I`d recommend doing some more research and definitely don`t take my answer as definitive!
