12a rating, can i take my 5yr old to watch the new indiana jones movie???

peter parker (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 21st May 2008, 16:41

so my son is a huge fan, seen the others and loved them but i have noticed that this movie has been classed as 12a,
as far as i thought i saw this as anyone under 12 can go but only with an adult but even after looking on the bbfc site i am still unsure.

i do plan to see it with the wife first so i can see if there is anything that might freak him out but then again he thought the exploding heads at the end of raiders was just funny.

Actually the answer is YES. Anyone under 12 can go to a 12A if accompanied by an adult.

Can you? Yes.
Should you? No, not unless there`s a very good reason why you think a 5 year old should see a film that the BBFC thinks suitable for those aged 12 and over. Seeing it first with your wife is a good idea but wait until it comes out on DVD as the cinema can be a daunting place: very loud and with a very big screen.

I ws about to say the same as Mr Becket.

Legally, yes you can take her. Morally, you should not.

At the very least, you should first watch it without her to ascertain which scenes, if any, you think are unsuitable for her.

But I do recommend getting the DVD, as you can fast forward through the "bad" bits so that she just enjoys the action.

I really really really disagree with the 12A rating! >:(

From what I`ve read it appears this one is nowhere near as horrific as the first 3 films, so if he loved those (skin melting and heart ripping etc) then he should easily be able to handle this.

Bit more information... it seems to be that Shia Lebeouf carries a knife that made this a 12A. The other violence that is mentioned doesn`t seem very brutal compared to the previous films.

Quote:
INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL is the fourth instalment in the popular `Indiana Jones` series. It shows the archeologist-adventurer, played by Harrison Ford, race against Russians to seek out mystical crystal skulls that hold the secrets to an ancient civilisation. The film was passed `12A` for moderate action violence and scary scenes.

There are two scary sequences in particular that were felt to be too prolonged and intense to be acceptable at the `PG` level. The first sees a Russian soldier consumed by a swarm of large ants who cover him from head to toe and then drag him underground into their nest. The second sees an army scientist consumed by flames that begin in her eyes sockets and quickly grow to take over her entire body. Although unacceptable at `PG` both sequences were felt to be acceptable as examples of `sustained moderate threat and menace` in line with the BBFC`s `12A` Guidelines. There are some further scary scenes set in burial chambers, with sight of mummified remains, and a scene of threat in which a character trapped in quicksand is rescued by grasping onto a snake.

There are several scenes involving action violence as Indy battles with the Russian soldiers, with a number of heavy blows being exchanged - one character is seen with a bloody mouth after being punched. Furthermore, the character of Mutt, a 1950s-style Teddy Boy, carries with him a flick-knife which is focussed upon throughout the film. The BBFC`s Guidelines at `PG` do not permit the `glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons`, and it was felt that Mutt`s fixation with his knife was sufficiently focussed upon to be better placed at `12A.`

what a crock of s***e.... morally its wrong? like i said my son is a huge fan and realy wants to go, he has seen the others and loves them and wants to see this one.

do i realy care what the bbfc think......no not at all, these are the people who think its ok to headbut a bad guy in lord of the rings but cut out the headbutt scene in star wars because lord of the rings is fantasy and star wars is to real.

and as i said once i have seen the movie and are happy its not too horrific (which i assume is why it gets a 12a) i will take my son i just wanted to know if i could.

i suppose taking him to see ninja turtles last year was also morally wrong...after all there was quite alot of violence in it :p

I personally wouldn`t say it`s morally wrong, although it is your responsibility to give him a good slap and tell him to be quiet if it`s too scary once he`s in there.

Or take him out, your call... ;)

I don`t see there being a problem with this 12A film, but there are others that I would have said definitely not to, such as Terminator 3 (possibly the most violence in a 12A I think).
Like I pointed out, it`s mainly due to the presence of the knife.

You asked for an opinion but got a little more than you expected. No need to jump down anyone`s throat though. Just curious, but if your son had already been exposed to GTA at a friends house (or your own) and wanted to own his own copy or play on it, would you let him?
