An interesting debate over at HUKD.

We really hate sex offenders as much as the next normal human being, but damn, do we have to chop off their kibbles & bits for the rest of their lives?
A new bill passed a Senate committee in Louisiana today that could give judges just that option. For first time offenders, judges would have the option to chop it off or burn it off in a chemical process called MPA (medroxyprogestrone acetate). For second time offenders, the judge would be required to turn them into a eunuch, as long as a doctor agreed. Just in case you thought this was the easy way out, the bill clearly states that the castration would not decrease jail sentences at all. Just an extra little bonus.
While removing someones sex organs would definitely deter sex crimes, is it right? What if we find out they were wrongly-convicted years down the line? The twig n berries wont grow back. This type of punishment hasnt been legally practiced anywhere since the 19th centuryunless you count the Nazis
Should we have it here in the uk?
Not seen a link to the story yet. [EDIT] Just found one.
So, what do you think?

RE: Castration Is Coming To America!
This is like a return to the Dark Ages!
And what about female sex offenders? We all know they`re out there. What bits do you chop off then?
No, I think it`s wrong. I prefer capital punishment for sex crimes, personally.

RE: Castration Is Coming To America!
I`m personally all in favour of this.
If they can prove without a shadow of a doubt that someone is a sex offender, then castration (perhaps female circumcision as well? but I doubt it would have as much of an effect as the male punishment) is an additional punishment that should be dealt to those who are guilty.
The sex drive of a man would be severely reduced (if not eradicated) if he was castrated - so surely he would be much less likely to re-offend.
Also - and here`s another debate to be had - do we really want to allow the possibility of these offenders producing offspring?
Right...I`m off to write some articles for the Daily Mail. :D

Another piece of uninformed, semi-hysterical misreporting by a half-wit with no medical or scientific understanding, if you asks me.
If he`d taken a moment to Wiki the word, he`d have found Medroxyprogesterone Acetate treatment is an hormonal treatment for sex offenders and is based on progestin contraceptives. It just overloads them with female hormones, so nothing falls off they just lose interest in sex.
Personally, I`m inclined to agree with the neck-stretching-chair-frying-poison-injecting-decapitating death penalty option on the grounds of disposing of a threat to society. Castration is actually no guarantee to stop somebody being a sex offender. Without actually forcing transgender surgery on an offender to deprive them of the wherewithall, they would still technically be a threat. Removing the berries as with a bull still leaves them with the twig which is still fully operational, and a continuing source of stimulation. Castratos and Eunuchs only had the berries removed, and while it reduced their interest in matters procreational they could still indulge although without risk of impregnation. The twig, on the other hand is a risky operation due to the blood supply involved, and the need to occasionally pass water through it. Destructive surgery of that organ has only been a recent development and effectively amounts to transgender surgery.
So, you load a sex offender up with medroxyprogesterone, lop off his twig and berries and fix him so that doesn`t kill him. What do you end up with? A transsexual still capable of being a threat to society, and all done on the state when there are thousands of poor individuals who want and need transgender therapy to sort out their lives and who cannot afford the costs as they have to go private.
Oh, and MilesR, female circumcision is little more than ritual mutilation. It results in terrible health problems throughout the countries where it is practised purely as an exercise in religious misogyny. If the developed world is trying to persuade the rest of the world to consign the practice to history, it cannot be seen to be happily condoning it as a method of punishment.

You are quite correct Mr Oates. A point well made.
