40 lashes in the Sudan - opinions please?
So the story is that an English teacher in Sudan has allowed her class to call a teddy bear "muhammed" (spelling:?)
The authorities have jailed her awaiting trial and she faces the threat of a fine, a jail sentence or 40 lashes for apparently breaking religious laws and offending the prophet
Whilst I appreciate that the country has these religious beliefs and follow the muslim faith in the way they do is she really guilty of offending said prophet by allowing a group of kids to name a teddy bear as such??
I dont think she is guilty of that - being a tad ignorant and not fully doing her homework maybe but I dont in any way see any offence in this action.
On top of that - 40 lashes?? a fecking flogging?? how backward is this country??
Can I ask for opinions - especially those of our Muslim members - with regard to this scenario??

You have to remember in a medieval society which has not updated laws, this will happen. It`s just a shame that we don`t start doing that here to terrorists.... Then again, that would only bring us down to their level of thought and action so... no... :/
Pity that the world is like this, and it`s a shame that they don`t realise that internationally the religeon has a bad enough reputation as it is, without this sort of fuel to the fire...

The punishment does not fit the crime....if there was one.
I think its f**king ridiculous.
edit: ps. what happens to the kids? Do they get a beating too?
pps. I know this is purely anecdotal but I`ve heard more than once that in Saudi you could leave your front door open with a bag of cash sitting their and no-one would touch it because of fear of getting your hand chopped of as punishment.....
Swings and roundabouts and all that :/

Even I know that Muhammed is a no-no, regardless of context.
I think its quite morbidly funny in quite a few areas, to be honest.
It reinforces `ISLAM=BARABARISM`, it reinforces `AFRICA=SAVAGES` and it reinforces `MISSIONARIES=RETARDS`. Everyone is a loser in this scenario.
Except for the fundamentalist muslims who, presumably, have had a hand in this whole affair. They are winners.
And to think the Sudanese government complained the Sudan 1 Food colouring thing made them look bad.....

A bunch of six yr olds conspiring to get thier teacher sent to jail?
Nah - never happen ;)
Its a barbaric and stupid situation that the teacher has got. It is taking the letter of the law and applying it unjustly.
To create an image of the Prophet is a no-no.
So to call a teddy bear Muhammed could be consider a no-no if you didnt have any common sense.
There are literally millions of people call Muhammad. My son is called Muhammed. By calling him Muhammed should I get sent to jail?
On another point teachers are held in high regard. The first instruction in the Quran is to read. In the first few years of Islam when the muslim army defeated another army and they took the soldiers captive they were released if they would teach the muslims to read.
The first Universities were muslim organisations - Bachelors Degree is from an arabic word.etcetera etcetera
I better stop other wise I may be accused of preaching!

What gets me is that the parents complained to the education authority - having a quiet word with the school wouldn`t be good enough to cause maximum fuss I suppose? Well, that`s what you get for doing good works for a country that should be grateful for foreign help. Shat on. </dailymail_mode>

RE: 40 lashes in the Sudan - opinions please?
so why is it ok to name a person Muhammed, presumably after the prophet, but its not ok to create an image of one? draw one, name a teddy after one?
Double standards if you ask me.
