Urgent Advice required - My sister got stung on ebay - BIG time.....

Neiliboy (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 3rd October 2007, 14:46

She`s an idiot but i`m sure she knows that by now...

Bottom line is she sent £4000 via western union for a car that was supposed to be in Essex. This is the sort of sh*t you see on Watchdog but you never think it would happen to you or some1 you know...

Seller is no longer responding. Ebay are pretty much useless, Police dont really want to know. In her defence she was sent some phish e-mails from what she thought was ebay basically telling her that western union is ok to use.

Is there *anything* at all she can do - anything she may not have thought of.....

Please dont respond with `If its too good to be true` ` she should have seen it first` etc because she`s learnt her lesson the hard way and i`m genuinely gutted for her. Its ALOT of money to lose.

If anyone can give me any practial advice than please do

Is there no way of claiming it back through Western Union? I`m not sure if there is any insurance offered on the transaction (in the same way as Credit Cards)? There is way of claiming back through eBay, but I think eBay take back a percentage of that. The process is a little long, but it`s probably worth looking at.

She must feel sick; I was stung for £26 on there recently and that bugged the hell out of me, so god knows how she is feeling. :(

My nephew `bought` a laptop same way - ebay + Western Union - £800. Never received it and never got his money back. Like you say, no-one was interested. As far as I`m aware there is not a lot you can do short of some pretty serious detective work and tracking down the scammers yourself. Don`t know where you`d start though.

I`m double annoyed because she never told me as she was doing it......she`s an ebay novice whilst i`m alot better (but by no means an expert)

Thing is i know that 1. You see the damn thing first and 2. NEVER use western union....

She did a vehicle HPI report thing and it came came legitimate so thats why they went for it...they used 2 credit cards - have they got any come back via this?

The best chance would be to report it to the police (her local police *and* the local police of the "seller" if the address is real), then file a claim online for small claims court IF the address is real. A friend was stung for only about £80 for a rabbit hutch and got in touch with everyone else the seller had ripped off to get in touch with the police and they ended up putting enough pressure on for the seller to refund them - that was just a very dodgy seller though, not an actual criminal.

No. :( It`s just like handing cash over to a stranger.

She can`t claim back from eBay either because Western Union isn`t one of their recommended payment methods - guess why.

Yes at least try the credit card chargeback route.

Yes, as xfg says. I think the best hope is to contact the credit card companies to do a chargeback. Get her on the phone to them NOW! Also credit card purchases are insured. Defo speak to them!

Credit cards - that gives a lot of hope. Chargebacks, no problem. However, did she draw cash from the cards? That`s a different story, unfortunately.
