hi there
it should be auto, unless there is a very good reason for you not to want to be a donor.
i am here today because of my Mum giving me one of her kidneys(thanks Mum!) :x
if i had not been for mum i could have been waiting anything up to 10 years. :(
so please do carry the card! or opt in for donor-ship!

When i got my new driving licence it gives you the option to say if you will donate. I called my mum to see if she had any problems with me saying yes. She did not so I have said they can have what they like, apart from my eyes. I don`t know why that is.

I think that if you choose to donate then fine, good for you.

If you choose not to donate then fine, tis your choice and your right to decide such.

Any persons body is not the property of anyone else and therefore organ donation should only occur if prior consent is given. Making it automatic unless you opt out goes totally against the grain IMO, it is your right to give consent - you should not be forced to tick a box to be entitled to the right not to donate

Therefore why change anything?

My concern for anyone who wished to opt out, is that they could not be confident of having their wishes observed.

What steps would be taken to check their opt out status before harvesting?

I think that making the intent to donate the default will create a situation more open to abuse and accidents.

What is needed is a far more effective means of recruiting donors.

Because people die while they wait? If you are that against it then what is the problem with ticking a box?

There are always posters advertising the national database for organ donors and a stash of donor cards when you enter GP surgeries, hospitals etc.

The issue of gaining consent for donation is the main point, I have known of cases where the deceased has consented and when the next of kin have been asked they have said no.

Its much easier to say if you dont want to donate organs registered on the opt out database and carry a no card.

That would help IMHO

Its not a case of being forced, its a case of making a statement as too whether or not you want to give up bits of you.
Im with the Doc in not giving my eyes but everything else can go - you dont get to see your organs during your life (unless you`re very unlucky!) and you certainly dont need them after, may aswell give them to someone who can use them

Didn`t know that. I remember it took me ages to remember to register "normally" but then I lost the card somewhere (think I should still be on database if anything happens?).

My mum was questioning why I had done it, but I just turned and asked what if I survived whatever may kill me in the first place and needed a donor to live?

I`m uncertain on the who automatic default at the moment, would probably need this argument to develop more so I could hear both sides before making a decision (leaning to yes at the moment).
