As quoted in article: Quote:
Quite how the police will be able to tell if someone is using a banned device is not clear. The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) said that as the Bill was still going through parliament, it had no comment to make on the subject.
So that will mean that the Old Bill will have to stop every motorist with Sat Nav to check if its using the illegal software - not workable is it seeing as they are already out there checking for motorists using mobile phones, reading newspapers, eating apples, checking road tax etc etc :/

I`m amazed these radar detectors weren`t jumped on the second they were made available. that said, if you can`t read the posted speed limit signs on any stretch of road you probably shouldn`t be behind the wheel anyway.

The sophisticated Gatso radar or laser-based detectors should not be confused with ordinary satellite navigation systems. These remain legal because they use GPS and published mapping technology to warn of published camera sites.
Sat Nav is still OK by the looks of it. If you have a Road Angel or similar then you`re in trouble I guess.
I have had a couple of laser/radar detectors in the past and as far as I am concerned they are useless anyway. They do pick up standard Gatsos, but also traffic light sensors, automatic doors etc - so many false warnings it`s not worth using. They don`t pick up Truvelo cameras as they use under road wires anyway - so no radar emissions. They are supposed to pick up Laser scatter too, but I have never had that happen even when driving towards a van. The laser beam is too narrow and usually pointed at your number plate, so it doesn`t pick anything up.
By far the best method of speed camera and mobile warnings is Sat Nav anyway IMHO, and they are still fine to use :D

"Both officers were dealt with by Cleveland Police under the fixed penalty process.
"These officers then decided to use the knowledge they have as police officers to use a technicality to wriggle their way out of their social obligations.
"By their actions, they have brought the police force and public service into disrepute.
Just because the signs were the wrong colour doesn`t get over the fact these guys broke the law & got caught.

Mile upon mile of posts with speed camera signs on but not one with a speed limit sign!!
Exactly why my satnav with camera warnings AND the speed limit is invaluable....see, it`s that difficult councils!!

One road I use regularly near to where I live had the speed limit reduced from 40 MPH to 30 MPH, this was only obvious by:
1 - the sudden disappearance of the 40 signs (there were no 30 signs put up in their place as it was then considered to be an urban road so you should assume it was 30
2 - Rapid increase in the number of police patrols with radar guns waiting along the road >:(
Not only signage! I remember watching one of the many "follow the police in their cars" mini series (this one was based in or around Yorkshire, IIRC). In one programme, they interviewed one policeman who said that they were NOT there to catch people out, going around trying to catch people speeding by any means, then later in the same programme, they interviewed another who then stated that there was one spot that he liked to set a trap at where he would wait at the bottom of a descending section of A road for lorries and the like that would build up speed coming down, he would wait behind a gap in some bushes at the side of an adjoining road, so that he could see them coming but they couldn`t see him!
OK, they catch you speeding, tough, pay it (if only they bothered to speed trap my road for the boy racers going towards the school), but I know some of these systems not only check your speed but also tax and other details, but in one case I know of, they only nail the speeders :/

RE: Radar and laser detection devices now illegal
Re 30 mph signs, I think that it is illegal for them to put up more than one sign, ie no reminders, somebody at TRL told me that.
