Does it matter which lane you`re in??

Juls (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 20th January 2007, 23:36

Just got back from Wales and wondered will I still get booked for speeding even if I was on the inside lane and other cars were going faster? The first time ( :( ) I was on the M4 on the inside lane doing about 82, both middle and outside had faster cars than me - van on bridge with big camera
Second time ( :( :( ) was just coming up to severn bridge, I was middle lane doing about 58 in a 50 zone with a car outside of me going faster - again van on the bridge with big camera.
I know its not big and its not clever and I deserve to be done but if I am it will be the most expensive trip home ever!

Very pi**ed off, Juls

I`ve never had ticket so can`t give accurate advice but I`m guessing the camera doesn`t differentiate between inside and outside lane.

Saying that I know a few lads who`ve thought they`ve been busted and never had a ticket come through.

You may get lucky, my understanding is you`ve got a 3mile cover on the speedometer because it is deliberately set lower than it shows, to avoid lawsuits against car companies. Plus you`ve also got the 50mile speed limit 54 acceptable rule (if thats speedometer speed or proper speed I`m not sure)

More importantly, why were you in Wales? It`s a s***ehole :o

1st point:- Nothing wrong with Wales!! :)

It doesn`t matter what lane you are in unfortunately, the speed limit is the speed limit. The camera may have been concentrating on the outside lanes (as you said faster travelling vehicles) as so you may be lucky :/

I`ve done the M4 trip a number of times and there`s always cameras on the later stretches of the M4 before the bridge. Keep an eye out for speed camera signs and slow down in these areas.

Good luck, Chris

Juls,

it doesn`t sound too good. The areas where you MAY have been caught in are known speed camera locations (the M4 was widely publicised in our local press/TV, as a warning to all the commuters etc. that use it).
As for the bridge, I know that they have been clamping down on the 50 MPH approach speed (towards the toll booths on both Severn crossings) but I`m not sure how fast you have to go before before they book you (can`t remember how fast my mate was going when he got nailed). They also have a bit of a problem with the large numbers they catch on the bridges (the number plate reading system can also check other detail such as MOT etc), and as Chris said Quote:

so looks like you may just have to wait and see. :(

Have you tried switching it on........?

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but the reason cameras take two pictures is so that they can tell which car is speeding.
They look at the distance travelled by each car compared with the markings on the road.
So they can easily tell which car is speeding,if two are in the picture.
So,if you weren`t speeding,don`t worry. 8)

Edit,I just noticed you were `done` by a camera in a van.
Again, the camera can only be pointed at one car at a time,so if any other cars were overtaking you,it stands to reason they were pointing it at them.

So,again,if you weren`t the fastest person on the road at that moment, they`d have to really hate you/your colour of car to point it at you. 8)
