for me Alton Towers or Thorpe park are both good value for money... yes the catering is expensive but there is nothing to stop you taking a packed meal, and personally i would avoid any school holidays...

markSparks999 is right, I think they`r a good day out if you follow his advice i.e.

a) avoid school holidays (or last week of term, when some have trips there)
b) take some food and drink
but most importantly
c) make sure you use nectar points/buy newspaper/fizzy drink/whatever else has buy 1 get one free promotion. Normally something is doing it. Sometimes even their own websites have the promotions for off season

Chessington is also good.

Si & Sade (& a few others here) have stayed at Woodlands in Devon, with glowing reports.

Conviently placed in August for clotted cream, Tithers, MS999, JulianF, me (with THO) with the DR200*GT.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Woodlands in Devon
this is a great place to stay as it has all the facilities you could need on site... but its also a great base to see the rest of south devon.

We`ve just had a holiday at a caravan at Hoburne Naish park, just on the coast under the New Forest. Very reasonable, nice site, and walking distance to the beach - recommended !
