New car seat legislation for children under 12

slipperysam (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 18th June 2006, 18:33

As of September 2006

Noticed this advertised in a Toys R Us flyer so checked it out on the web. Means my 10 year old will have to use a booster cushion, probably for the next 18 months. He is well chuffed :/

Seems it does not apply to travelling in Taxis or on a "short and occasional trip".

Details here

Sam.

I believe this is a good idea but I think they are throwing the blanket to wide!

I know that when I was 11 I was over 6 foot tall! I do not think a booster seat would have helped me!

I think there should be some kind of height limit implied in the new law!

There is a height limit, the new law only applies to children aged 3-12 years and under 135 cm in height. My lad falls well "short" of this.

I have no problem with him having to use one if it is going to make car travel safer. But why the exemption of "occasional journeys over a short distance". Seems a bit diificult to define in the eyes of the law i.e. what is "occasional" and what is "short".

I always thought the statistics showed short journeys were the most dangerous,so the exclusion doesn`t make much sense at all.

The exemption is there so that if you get caught in traffic and ask a friend to pick sprog up from school thay can do so legally without going off and buying a child seat. Makes sense to me, we all occasionally pick up other peoples kids in an emergency and there`s no way I can get three child seats in the back.

Trick is to take my wife`s SLK and not pick up any of them of course.

Kids or booster cushions? :D

I think kids are going to be p***ed off, but they all have to do it, so nobody`s getting singled out. Well apart from the ones who make it to 135cm last! :D

What good is this new law when you regularly see cars with 4 kids in the back without even a seat belt in sight.

Oooh it makes me angry!
