The Wire - best program on tele that nobody watches ?

Wad (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 14th May 2006, 11:35

Does anyone else on here watch The Wire ?

Just finished watching the second season on DVD, and I reckon its one of the best TV shows I`ve ever seen - easily up there with The Sopranos and Deadwood. Season 3 is currently showing on FX tv. Thing is, I don`t know anyone else who watches it. Surely I can`t be alone ?

If you`re looking for something to watch give this a go. You need to watch each series from the first episode (as you would 24 for example). Season 1 can be had for about 25 quid now.

Edit : Sorry I meant to put this in the DVD / Film forum. Doh!

Awesome show, looking forward to season 4 starting later this year.

I can`t believe that people don`t seem to watch this. It`s highly rated in America, but there were rumours that there wasn`t going to be a fourth season because the ratings weren`t that good.

That`s usually a sign for a cult following on here like Firefly and Futurama.

Watched the first three seasons in the space of a few weeks at the end of last year after got the first season from lovefilm. I only ordered it because I was reading some news on 24 and it was mentioned in that article.

If your not willing to shell out for a boxset without seeing the show, then I`d highly recommend people to sign up for a months free trial with one of the dvd rental services and check it out (which is what i did ;))

By the way Wad, avoid the official website, the layouts changed now, but I went on to find out if there was going to be a 4th season, before I`d watched season 3, and the first page was an episode summary from season 3 which gives away quite a big spoiler. >:(

Its changed now as its not on the homepage, but as soon as you go episode guide it gives it away.

Yhe, The Wire is a Brilliant show. I got turned onto it by some-one at work. As an NTL viewer I didn`t used to get FX so didn`t get season 1, FX arrived by the time season 2 was due to start. Bloke at work told me after he watched season 2 ep 1 it may be tricky getting to understand the character relations, so I got season 1 "by other means" and the first couple of season 2, and watched it over 2 weeks, and then watched season 2 weekly, to give us something to talk about at work, and then season 3 when they showed that.

Season 3 finished a few weeks ago, replaced by Sleeper Cell, which is also v good.

The website does/did have a "family tree" of the organisations, much like they have on the office wall, but although interesting can give things away. Saying that, so can tv.com/imdb when you look up a person, and see when he stopped being in it :(

Oh dear, Oh dear. I had the first few episodes for some while & after reading this thread decided to watch it from the start. Last night we watched the first one & oh, dear, slow, yacking, swearing. I don`t mind swearing but a lot was unnecessary swearing. If it doesn`t improve it`s adios Wire.

We love The Sopranos, The Shield, NYPD Blue & so on but all had good first episodes that got your interest right off with a fair ammount of action & continued that way.

I`d stick with the Wire, its a bit of a slow starter, (no OMG moments like the end of the first episode of the shield) but I`d recomend watching the whole first series before passing judgement on it.

It takes a while to get into because there`s quite a lot of characters to introduce.

Don`t forget Lem, and even Shane to some extents were bit part players in the first series of The Shield, (Not even worth mentioning Ronnie;) )

For me too one of the best series I have been watching lately. I agree a lot of swearing. But I love the fact that there is not 1 main character and all actors can act pretty well. Can`t wait to see season 3

Glad others are watching it too. Paull, its worth sticking with a bit longer I reckon, the characters all develop personality as the show goes on, and the plot picks up.

The swearing (much like Deadwood) isn`t for everyone, but its surely more realistic than what we normally get. Was watching Criminal Minds recently - pretty good show - but there was one scene when one guy suggested he wanted to kick the snot out of another. Ruined the tension completely for me.

Oh - thanks for the heads up about spoilers on the website, will stay clear.
