is my 7 year old sony 32 wide crt tv faulty?

Just recently noticed a red / pink tint at either side of the television, but its only noticable when you go to the extreme sides of the television and look sideways down at the tv screen, other than that you do not notice it watching as normal straight in front of the television. Ive never noticed it before, so i think there maybe a problem. I do have some large speakers nearby which can distort the picture (magnetic field) but did manage to move them a few centimetres away from any noticable effects when i first installed the television.

Any ideas of what the problem is?

If it`s seven years old take my advice...scrap it!

It`ll be cheaper to buy a new one than have your current Sony repaired!

No, don`t scrap it!

Try this first...switch on and off every 10 seconds or so to try and re-gauss the tube.

There may even be regaussing button on the set; have a look in the manual.

I had a similar problem with our faithful Toshiba tv about 8 years ago when a speaker that wasn`t shielded got too close and affected the field quite badly. The on/off trick worked fine but it took about 20 times.

And sometimes a stray magnetic field in the room can affect the picture. Try moving the set a few inches in each direction.

If that don`t work.....I`ll have it!

Just kidding!

Hope you sort it.

Mike.

Our Sony (now about 8 years old but not widescreen) 32inch had exactly same problem from New!
it took 3 attempts to fix it. 1st one they couldn`t even work out how to take the back off :) :D . 2nd they said needed a new board 3rd they got round it by a bit of soldering. Still going well.

Mind you to fix it now might well be cheaper to use it as excuse to get better one.

Good luck.

It sounds like your Speakers are indeed to blame - strong magnetic fields should be kept well alway from CRT tubes.

I have the same problem occuring from time to time on my PC monitor, but that at least does have a de-gaussing button.
